Hi,

I am re-installing the wiring on my gs, and I realised that some bad work has been done by previous owners... First there is no fusebox, second the igniter, was bolted on the frame ( in a random spot) and third I dont know were the regulator, the relay and the starter solenoid goes...
What would help me is:
- The 1978 gs750 wiring diagram ( not the one available on gs resource forum, wires on my bike are not of the same colors...)
- Some pics of the original location of electrical components, the ones attached to the battery box...

Thanks

Here is a pic of my bike right now...

On most suzuki's the components bolt to plates on either side of the battery box. The ignitor usually goes on the right side, fuse block and solenoid on the left side. Some early model bikes have regulator/rectifiers as two separate components, either mounted to a plate or under the battery box.

Do you have the battery box? If not you'll need one and the brackets. You'll also need a fuse block.

Go to basscliff's website and see if there is a factory manual there for your bike. Should have a wiring diagram in the manual.

If you go to Basscliff's site and follow to his R/R replacement guide, you'll see a pic of a mounting plate ( holds fusebox, flasher, etc. ) that looks alot like your plate.
If someone has changed wire colors (are you sure ?) , no wiring diagram will be helpful- you'll have to figure out what's what.

Hi
Actually no one changed the wire colors, its just that the person bypased the fuseblock... so there are wires that dont go were they should.

The gs 750e diagram on bassclif's website do not match the wiring harness that I have. Actually I have two 1978 gs750 wiring harnesses and they are identical ( one from california and the other one from canada). Both harnesses do not match the bassclif diagram. I have the impression that the diagram available on his site are from a 77 or a 79 or a other year...

Thank you

Your bike shouldn't have an ignitor as standard - it was a points model. Looks like it's been altered quite a bit. Have a look at a 1980 wiring diagram and see if that matches up.

That part labelled "igniter"- how handy! How many wires coming out of it? Remove contact points cover and tell us ( or take pic ) what you see- points or signal generators?

Hahahahaha thats a good one, and you are right!
check this out!

And one other thing, is this a stock regulator, it doesn't bolt to the battery box... under or on the sides...

Hi, check out the pics...

Actually I did some reseach on ebay for a IC igniter and found out that my igniter is from a Kawasaki kz750 or kz1000 of 1982-1983....

I am just wondering if its a good upgrade and if the ignition curve matches what the engine needs...

I found out interesting info on my regulator. It seems that its also from a Kawasaki like the igniter, Its a shindengen SH530-12 2.1...

Anyone knows about these regulators and igniter and has anyone tried it on there 77-79 gs750 bike?

Now I understand why my regulator and igniter do not fit on my bike.... lol... I just need to find some good diagrams of my bike and the KZ bikes and compare... to see how I can incorporate the fuseblock...

If anyone has pic of a gs750... under the side cover were the wiring is... I would be happy...

thanks

Previous owner must have had surplus parts bikes lying around! The kawa ignition set up seems like lots of work - fitting the mechanical advancer to the signal generators, etc- timing would have to be close but someone else will have to comment on ignition timing problems.
The Shendengen r/r is what lots of us use to replace our suzuki OEM r/r's-it's more robust and has a sense wire to better determine battery voltage.

The early 750s didn't have a fuse block, just a single inline fuse in one wire. Also, did the kawasaki use a mechanical spark advance, or was the advance done electronically in the ignitor? Is the mechanical advance still in use on your 750?

Thanks for the fuse block info, I have the impression that they started using the fuse block in 1979.

The mechanical advance is still in use, as you can see on the pictures there are springs. I took of the sensor plate and they move freely, moving the cam as well... I am curious to see how this will work out...

I ll try to find out if the 1982 kawasaki kz750 had a mechanical advance with the igniter... I hope my set up is not a hybrid version GS KZ ignition...
ish!

thanks

Thanks for the info.. about the shendenyen....

For the ignition: it seems that 82kz750 had mechanical advance and a electroic igniter with sensor... I think The previous owner took the whole setup from a kz....

Who knows, maybe he was very smart- and you will find out!
I came across this pic purported to be from 81 gs750L- isn't it a nice and neat layout ( missing the ignitor though )

The ignitor would not be attached to that plate, its on the right side of the bike near the battery box.

From a wrenching perspective, working on an 1982 KZ and a 1980 GS is pretty similar.

I can take some pics this weekend and post. I have a 1978 with stock wiring (and a Dyna ignition like yours).

I think I am going to fabricate a plate to install the igniter and the regulator since there from the kz... I ll send pics when its done...
