    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Ok, so about ayear ago I bought a GS1000. I've put about $700 into getting it going again and now it runs about 30 seconds and quits! I'm lost! Has anyone got any suggestions?
 
Well, I would start by checking my fuel petcock and verifying my carbs were getting gas.
 
Thanks for your suggestions? I made a gas tank out of a 50.5 oz (1.43 kg) ketchup bottle, the nipple is the same size as the gas line and have I still the same problem.

I won a working set of carbs on ebay, but thay haven't arrived yet.

As far as the ignitor, are you talking about the started relay?

Sorry, but as I've said before, a piece of paper has more mechanical knowledge than I do......but I'm trying!!!!! :oops:

Could be a lot of things. What have you done to try to fix it so far?
Any other symptoms? Dark exhaust? Fuel leaking? Backfiring? Is the bike stock? If not, what mod's and brand names of mod's?
What's wrong with the carbs that made you buy some other used ones?
 
Hmm, is your ketchup bottle vented? (A hole in the top of it) If not try that. If it runs then look at your gas cap for a plugged vent or petcock for a bad diaphram.
 
So far, I have bought a new gas tank, petcock (yes, the vacuum line is hooked up to it), new points and condensers. The carbs I won on ebay arrived today, so I will try putting them on. The guy I bought them from, in Regina, SK, said they were cleaned and ready to go. The gas line has a filter on it, so I'll be able to see if there is any flow. As far as any mods, it all looks stock to me. There are no real symptoms(?) to speak of. It runs for about thirty seconds, then fades and dies. Sometimes to get it going, I squirt some gas into the airbox.
 
Well, if a shot of gas helps, then that suggests fuel flow/starvation problem, instead of wet fouling the plugs (possible weak spark).
Could be float levels, poor carb synch, air screws/fuel screws adjusted wrong, etc. Since you're getting "new" carbs, we'll just wait top see what happens.
I hope the new carbs are bench synched correctly, floats adjusted, etc. Might be a good time to replace the manifold o-rings too.
Hope you get the right carbs, with correct jetting. Always a gamble with E-bay. Are you sure the carbs are the correct ones? Can we see a pic'?
 
Make sure you hook the fuel & vent line up correctly The vacuum for the petcock hooks to the # 3 carb for 79
 
The carbs arrived today. They are Mikuni VM26 roundslide carbs from a 1978 GS1000. I took some pictures, but they don't want to be copied into this note.

No, I didn't poke a hole in the bottle. I gave it a slight squeeze every few seconds.
