    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1979 GS550E Carbs - missing vacuum hose?

I took the carbs off of my bike today and noticed that there seems to be a missing hose (maybe a vacuum hose?) between carbs 2 and 3 (blue circle in photo). Can anyone confirm that there is supposed to be a hose there and also why or why not?

There was already a hose between carbs 3 and 4 and also between 1 and 2 when I pulled the carbs off of the bike. I went ahead and put a hose between carbs 2 and 3 just in case. I can easily cut it off if it isn't needed.

The carb bodies are not drilled though on the center carbs, where you marked. That tube won't do any good.
 
If you look at the edge of the red circles on carbs 2 and 4 (carbs are upside down, so #4 is on the left, #1 is on the right, in that picture), you will see the fittings where VENT hoses are supposed to be attached. The vent fitting on #4 is attached via a short hose to #3 (which you have installed) and, similarly, the fitting on #2 is connected to #1. There should be no vent hose between #2 and #3, just the fuel "T" that is shown just above your blue circle.

Those vent hoses should be routed over the airbox and end up either behind the airbox or under the seat in a pocket of relatively still air. They are the atmospheric reference for the carbs, so need to have calm air at the ends.

Thanks for the quick, detailed response. I've still got a lot to learn about these things. You've definitely helped.
