DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1979 GS550L Return To The Road

  • Thread starter Thread starter ScrumDown
  • Start date Start date
For those that are "watching" this sloooooooooooow return to the road. Here are my intents for the near future.

  • Pull the carbs
  • Purchase o-rings from cycleorings.com
  • Adjust the valves (not sure where I'll get the shims from)
  • Purchase replacement fasteners, for not only the carbs but other areas too. I'll use the cool trick learned here on TheGSR. take a look at the factory part #'s listed on the micro-fische that's posted on various OEM parts websites and they tell you the screw size. HERE COMES THE TRICK take the item # say 02112-05167 nad it's screw size is a 5 x 16mm and a 02112-06127 is a 6 x 12mm. Also, the number in the quantity column tells you how many are needed. BTW -I copied this from somewhere else on the site. although I changed a couple of words.

Now the purchases are dependent on finances. My house bills and kid's x-mas comes first and then the bike. So they may not happen until after the new year. We'll see.

If you want me to take pictures of the cleaning & adjusting processes, say so. If not, i may not remember to.

Of course we want pics, you know we like pics, no pics means it didn't happen.;)
I think you will see a general decline in the build section in the coming month as everyone focuses on family and Christmas.

Heck ya we want more pics, that'll help keep your juices flowing towards the bike over the holidays!
Oh and one more thing for the record...
YAY YOU!

Will be removing the carbs tonight, hopefully. I hope to order the replacement parts sometime this weekend. So sometimes over the next month I rebuild the tired & dirty buggers.

Don't worry I'll take pictures for you all.

For those that love them so much ... here is 1 picture of my carbs after I pulled them off.

Here is the link if you want to see the rest.

Just ordered the 8 carb gaskets & 4 O-ring intakes for 61.14 from BikeBandit. Have my list of socket-head fasteners & lock-washers (56 total), I'll get from the local hardware store.

And when cycleorings.com page will come back up I'll order the rubber o-ring kit for my carbs.

BTW -- With this order, I have about $120 sunk into the FREE bike so far.

Ordered the VM o-ring kit & fasteners from cycleorings.com; received an email from Mr. Barr stating he's mailed them.

I feel as excited as a 6 yr old is about Christmas morning waiting for my deliveries.

Correction ... With these orders & my previous purchases, I only have about $135/$140 invested in the bike included purchase. So far.

SWEET! The cycleoring parts order came yesterday. Now just waiting on the gaskets & in-take Orings.

First of all congratulations on the bike. Second of all get yourself a shim removal tool. You will want it. Can be found at Z1, bike bandit... so forth. Second for the shims find a local suzuki or any motorcycle repair shop slash store. They may have shims on hand. What I did was check my shims to determine which ones were out of specification. Then I removed shims from the ones that were too tight and bought the three consecutive sizes down from it. I then played swap and check on each out of spec valve, to determine the sizes I needed to buy in order to get the clearances in specification. In the end I did some swapping here and there and all I ended up needing to order was one shim. Hope that was of some help. Good luck.

Paul

Thanks for the input. Shims and related tools are my next purchase. (Need to save cash up again.)

Check out the Shim Club in the GS Services section of the forum. A lot easier and cheaper to work with.

Which reminds me, I need to put some in the mail back to Ray:o

Apperciate the heads up, (if you will). I spoke with Ray to see what the ins & outs were.

I have not been able work on the bike because I've been laid out with Pneumonia. Maybe this weekend ....

No workie on the bikie for Scrumie. This makes me an unhappy camper!

So while I was healing from the pneumonia, my pop's had complications from his back surgery he had in late Jan. So I had to go visit him for a while. And just a bunch of other crap life handed me on a fake silver platter.
Although, I am hoping to maybe get some time this coming Sunday. Wish me luck!

Here is what I have done so far, as soaking is concerned.

This is a picture of some of the stuff that came out of the carbs ...

BTW - picking more Berryman's today. So the whole thing can be covered.

It's been a while since I did anything with the bike. Work and family crap has really put a damper on my bike working time.

So today I decided to replace all the rubber gaskets and I ran into this ... (What's wrong?)

Here is a better look. (Now do you know what is wrong?)
Pilot-Fuel-Screw-3.jpg

Think that may cause the carbs/bike to run rough?! :(

So far that was the only part that is FUBAR'D. Will try to do more work tonight.

So I ordered the replacement Pilot Fuel Screw on Friday and it arrived today ... Pretty Cool! THANX Z-1 Industries! Not so cool, is getting a call from one of my 7 older brothers that another of our brothers had to have emergency heart surgery today. (I am one of 10.) What an effing way to take the wind out of my sails. With everything else that has happened this year ...

HEY 2012 ... P?g Mo Th?n!

Work on the bike has been at a stand still for the last month or so. I'm working 60+ hrs a week. I've hand a bunch more of family stuff to deal with. So my therapy on 2 wheels, has been neglected. That said ... Carbs have been rebuilt, I just need to put them back in. I am hoping to have her at least running by the end of June.
