    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1979 GS850G Oil Pressure

I have a freshly restored 1979 GS850 with approximately 15,000 miles currently. My question is what is normal oil pressure for this bike. The readings that I'm getting from my VDO gauge are as follows:

At Idle about 1,500 RPM = roughly 0 psi
A Rev to 4k-5k RPM = 3 to 6 psi
High Rev (riding down the road) = 7 to 10 psi

During the restore I had all covers off of the motor to put new seals on. Took the oil pan cover off to clean it along with the pickup; as well as took the valve cover to check clearances.

Currently running Castrol Syntec 10w40 along with a WIX filter.

My question is; is this an acceptable oil pressure for a GS850?

Yep. That idle pressure might be a little low, but I don't have a gauge to watch.

Another thing to keep in mind is that pressure will tend to go down as the oil warms up. Where you see 7-10 going down the road, it might drop to 5-7 or so when the oil is hot. One of the guys that actually has a gauge will have to give you specific numbers.

Yep, these babies don't need much oil pressure due to the roller bearing crankshaft. And the most often recommended carb mod for pods with a 4-n-1 is the Dynajet Stage 3 jet kit (I saw your other thread). I hear it takes most of the guesswork out of the equation.

I have a gauge and my oil pressure is about the same.
 
The engines with the roller bearing cranks just sorta pump oil around, but there's very little pressure -- often not enough to register on a gauge.

As long as oil is making it up to the cams (and it is), you're golden.
 
Thanks for the info... I feel better about riding it now. What brought the question up was showing to the person that I had bought it off of and they asked about the oil pressure being so low and then it peaked my curiousity.

Thanks for the fast response... I'll be sure to inform him as well since he deals with a few bikes.
 
If he deals with other brands too, might inform him that some of the old Kawasakis that ran roller bearing cranks also had just bout the same numbers in regards to oil pressure.
 
I have one of the fancy Reno Bruce guages and that is where my pressure is. When I installed it the local wrench told me they used to install a similar guage when these bikes were new and most people would call up or come back worried because the low pressure these motors run at would make them think something was wrong.
 
Check the oil level, start her up. Check, No oil in window Ok its working !!!
