A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have just bought a new to me 1979 GS850g, I have had a few friends tell me to change the ignition out to electronic, but from what I have read its seems to be 50/50 on changing where do you guys stand.

Very good advice from your friends. We all put Dyna electronic ignitions in. Bolt it in and forget about it.

I have had a hard time finding the dyna ignition for the 1979 maybe I'm just not looking at the right place

For the record, the '79 850 was the only year that had points.

Some owners have had the stock electronic system fail and have replaced with Dyna.
Again, it's a straight bolt-in, but only for the earlier years.
Later years needed to have a mechanical advance mechanism installed.

.

Buy an inductive timing light and do the timing of the ignition dynamically... it is MUCH closer when done this way than static timing. The good thing about going from points is that the mechanical timing advance on your bike will have T, F and 4500 rpm timing marks. The bikes initially equipped with an electronic ignition only have these marks for the 1/4 cylinders and just the T mark (Top Dead Center - which isn't useful for ignition timing with a timing light).

Not only does Z-1Enterprise have what your looking for, they are about the lowest price around. I recently bought a complete ignition system from them. Dyna-S, Dyna Coils and Dyna Plug wires all for under $300 👍

I got it thank you all so much for your help, my bike is running great now a little slow to warm up, but over all good, I just want to get out ahead of as many problems as I can
