    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1980 GS1000 Carb question

Hi all,
I'm bringing back to life an '80 GS1000 that was in a barn for some time, 75K miles. Have taken carbs off and cleaned them thoroughly. Bike actually started up pretty easily after getting bowls filled. 2 questions: How does choke work on these carbs? When I pull the choke on, I don't see anything closing off the openings. There are those cylindrical pieces in the openings right now and they seem to stay in the closed position even when running. Now the problem I have is when I try to rev higher than 3-5000, bike just bogs down. No power or acceleration. No leaks from carbs to intake. I DO have the filter box off at the moment, maybe that's a problem? I'd appreciate any help. This is substantially different than my 79 GS850 and I think these are much different carbs.

"Choke" implies that you cut off the air so the mixture is richer...we all call it a choke and Suzuki even labels it choke on the knob...but in the manuals they call it 'starter'. It opens an additional passage that adds fuel to the mixture. This bypasses the sliders, which is why you don't see them move.

No filter will make a big difference. Before you get too deep into fixing the problem with low RPM cover the carb intakes with your hand...or some cardboard or something. Not the entire opening...but cover about 1/2 the circle of each carb intake and see if it makes a difference. I suspect it wll be very surprising.

With carburettors, it's all about the air flow. Fuel is just along for the ride.
 
choke is just a term. your carbs have a enrichener circuit.

this is a totally separate fuel circuit with a fuel and air bleed supply in addition to the other 3 circuits inside each carb.
