DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

1980 GS1000S Progress!!

Does anyone know why Suzuki moved the clock toggle switch the hidden location on the 1980? The 79 was on the meter case and the hole is plugged with a rubber grommet on the 80.

Because passers by would turn the clock off.

Both hidden and on view options were available on the 79 bike in the UK as well as the 80.

I found the glass at a dealer... They actually had two and I had them send both to me. Unfortunately, one arrived broken.

Replacing the glass was not too difficult. After removing the gauge unit from the bike, you simply start removing the covers (2) from the back.

Plan on the original gasket that surrounds the glass ( you won't be able to see it) being melted to the unit. Patiently heat it up with a hair dryer. I was able to reuse the original gasket.

The weak point of the glass is where the hole is for the knob. I assume most of them broke due to the knobbeing pressed against the glass.

Had me hoping that it was made at a glass shop. The search goes on. If you find another please let me know.

I had to make mine. I'm not a glass worker by any means but I found it easy enough to do - just took quite a bit of time making the edges nice and smooth.

If I didn't locate one, my plan was to have one made out of plexiglass. I assume it is a fairly simple project. In fact, thinking about it, why not just cut it yourself?

The edges are hidden.

The R/R is not stock...

Yeah Baby!!!! I just took it for a ride down the street. That rattle is indeed the clutch!!! When the gas was on and moving, the engine sounded perfect!! I am sure it is fine tuning time.

I may prefer to get some hands on help if anyone is interested. I am happy the way my carbs turned out but the syncing and valve tuning has me a little concerned.

That was the most enjoyable 100 yard ride I have ever taken!!

good gosh omighty!!! A wes cooley!!I would give a lot for one of those.

Larry is hard at work on my S parts. He was kind enough to send some progress pictures. Parts were in great shape, with only a couple of imperfections.

I have a Mecury sync you can use. It's a virgin as I have not used it yet.
If possible I'd like to be there, we could learn together as I have some carbs apart right now.
Perhaps other local GSers would like to attend .If your up to it PM me.
Maybe a valve adjusting expert would like to attend;)
One of these days I am going to try to get together with a couple guys from the site fo ra tinkering day.
OK where are you in Mass.? :-k

Most of the state is only about 3 hours from me, and I am looking for weekend projects. I also have my shim box and mercury sticks with me. :D

Hey Steve,

Valves have not been adjusted yet. However, I am focusing on the cosmetic stuff now. I have the front end torn down for polishing and brake rebuilding. I am not sure if it would be a good time to adjust the valves?

PERFECT time to adjust the valves. :D

One of the requirements before adjusting the valves is to assure that the engine has not been run for at least 8 hours.

By the way, most of us tend to make sure the bike runs well before spending the time and money on cosmetics. :-k

.

I agree with Steve about being the perfect time to do the valves. I'd take him up on his offer.:)

Here is a couple of progress pics (before and afters) of the front end. Caliper paint looks a little too shiny for my liking. I was not able to commit to a wheel paint. So for know, I will stick with the clean, faded original look. Which I think is an exceptable look.
