1980 GS1000S Progress!!

On all the GS1000S's that I've done, I've put enough clear on to completely bury the stripes and 99% of the decals. Those babies are thick, especially if they come from Reproduction Decal, which makes a nice product, but they're heavy. It takes a lot of clear to cover them. But, you do it in stages, with plenty of time to dry. 2/3's of it actually gets sanded off in the process so there's never a huge buildup. The main reason I paint the stripes (and would rather paint the decals, too), is because not only is painting them artistic, and just plain..cool..they're so much easier to bury under clear. 1/3 as much clear, which translates to a lot of money saved in time and materials. I always ask a customer how far they want to take it. If they want it to be absolutely factory/concours correct, I probably wouldn't even rub them out. Most people want a high-end finish but still look factory correct by using decals, so I leave a hint of the decal edge, such as Chuck's. His bikes are all so beautifully factory correct, I made that call on his. ;) So far all of my Cooley customers have wanted all the edges to go away, so that's how they get em. Either way, they look really nice, I think.

Larry, By all means.....feel free to run with your artisticinis's:D, and paint those decals on.....

Yep. Talked to the man (Phil K.) whose design team originally made the decision to nix badges in favor of decals when the S model was conceived. Still think the b/w stripes on my tank are painted on... Ed would know fer sure.

Cool...How did you make that connection?

I'll let the parts continue to dry and the decals to gas out for another day or so then start the clear again. I enjoy this stage..all the work is starting to pay off at this point..cool.

Alright, I stop hanging around here for a couple days and try to find that Honda for you to paint.

Honda..? What kind? Tell ya what, I'll trade you a paint job for your 900F..hee hee.. I love those bikes, and I want to make a Freddie Spencer replica out of one SO bad..then..if I could only find a Kawasaki ELR..my life's mission to replicate all the great Japanese Superbikes would be complete.

I want a 76 550 done up in the stock brown color scheme. This was my 1st street bike that I bought when I was 15.

I have to update my profile, I sold the 900F a couple of months ago. That was my bike of choice for a long time. I have owned 3 1100F'S and 3 900F'S.

I have always wanted a Wes Cooley, and now that I have one, I have left the F's behind.

Ah yes, I remember our conversation about the 550. There's a couple of brown one's on eBay right now.

I rode all the F models, had an '80 750F. My friend had a 900F and I've ridden and always lusted after a nice 1100F. That was the first bike I ever did 135mph on. :D

I, too, have always wanted a Wes Cooley, so I don't feel like I've "down-graded" at all..in fact, the Suzuki is every bit the bike the 900F was and a little more. I still like em, though.

I am keeping my eyes open, hoping I find a CB550 close by.

I did see the ones on Ebay. I have purchased bikes over the internet and been happy with it. But, I have also been screwed!!

Years ago I bought an 1100F on ebay, 3k miles away. Had it shipped and put it aside for awhile. When I finally got to tinker with it, I realized it was a 900F engine.

Had a go around with the previous owner who insisted he had no idea. I got something out of him, but it was a bad deal.

So, if I can buy local, I do.

After 2 more rounds of clear coats. Next group will be finished pics. It's beginning to look a lot like Xmas....:D

I'm a busy guy......I like multi-purpose products, such as those shop rags. It gives me the ability to wipe the wheels and chain down and then go right into a little waxing!! Huge time saver.

And now I want to send him mine..but i gotta wait a few more months till that gets done. I likey these A LOT!!!
