    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1980 gs1100 coil/gauge swap

Should the gauges from an 83 gs1100, *the ones that have the oil temp and that go up to 140 fit on my 1980 gs1100, with out too much trouble? Also where would I hook up the gear indicator, and I have an after market oil cooler on my 80,how hard is it to hook up the oil temp gauge, Also Do I have to cut the coil wires to replace them with after market coils? I am not sure how to go about putting the new ones in

The 82-83 has a switch down at the output shaft that signals which gear you are in for the indicator display. I don't know if it will fit onto your 80 model or not.

The temp gauge connects to the same sensor that the pressure idiot light does. The 82-83 had a sending unit with two outputs for this to work. I would think that the new sending unit would fit your 80, but not certain on that...

Also Do I have to cut the coil wires to replace them with after market coils? I am not sure how to go about putting the new ones in

Now I can finally be of some use. :)

My OEM coils had the wires bonded straight into the coil body and I indeed cut them to replace the coils. My replacement coils were from a GSXR600 and had blade connectors on them, so I simply crimped the correct connectors onto the cut ends of the harness wires and connected them up to the new coils. Been working well for the last several thousand km's.

The switch is missing on mine, so I am not intimately familar, but it mounts behind the countershaft sprocket cover, to the side of the cases, just in front of the countershaft sprocket.

it will work, with the possible exception of the temp gauge.
it uses a separate sender for the temp gauge that normally screws into the same plate as the pressure sender just behind the pressure sender.

the sender is still available for the 1100E ($77.89) but the 1100ES uses a different sender and it is no longer available (there are interestingly several other differences between the E and ES)

I had a 83 E cluster on my 80 1000G and never got around to solving the temp gauge issue as I never was able to get the speedometer to read correctly.
the faster you would go the further the speedo was off (IE at a true 85 it would show 120) but the odometer read correctly.

you will need wiring schematics for both bikes as some wiring colors are different.
 
the 80 and the 83 both have 19 inch wheels so the speedo should be on right?

the odometer was dead on but the speedo wasn't, I dont know why.
I was trying to upgrade from my 85mph speedo to a 140mph one and in three attempts I struck out all three times, 2 78 speedometers and the complete 83 cluster, all three showed faster than the bike was going.
one of the 78 clusters was off 10mph @ 70 mph true speed.
the second one showed 82mph @ at a true 70mph
and the 83 cluster was worse still.

the original 85mph speedo reads just fine.
