Since I finished the GSXR swap recently I've been trying to decide if I want to start looking for parts for a winter project. I'm not sure exactly what I'd like to do, but I'd like to pick up a few more ponies if anything. Any recommendations? 82/83 cam swap? Anymore info/opinions on putting GSXR/Bandit oil cooled heads on an old GS would be great.

This is what Chef has and it runs like a bat out of hell.

1980 GS 1100L w/ 1166 Wiseco bore kit, .340 lift Web Cams,
Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, APE cam chain tensioner, Vance and Hines balanced clutch hub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, Derale oil cooler, Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, 36mm GS1150 carbs, K&N pods, Honda R/R, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs and Kerker 4-1 exhaust.

The only thing I have missing from the list is this:
Mine also runs well, although the 1166 is still going in. For the money, I would say the Wisco kit is good value
with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves,

Here goes; don't make me add it up

Here goes; don't make me add it up

That would blow my gig with my low cost restore :(

Here goes me guessing of the top of my head. No labor included

w/ 1166 Wiseco bore kit,
Requires: Gasket Set $110; Cylinder Bore;$200 1166 Piston Kit(piston,pins,rings,cerclip included) ($430)

.340 lift Web Cams ($330),
Ape heavy duty valve springs ($85)
, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves($600-$700)
APE cam chain tensioner($55)
Vance and Hines balanced clutch hub($300 or $150 used on ebay)
Star Racing high volume oil pump gears ($65)
Derale oil cooler($80??), Fittings ($150 ???)
Dynojet stage 3 jet kit ($100),
36mm GS1150 carbs($100 used e-bay),
K&N pods($100),
Honda R/R 9$40),
Progressive rear shocks ($150??)
fork springs ($65)
Kerker 4-1 exhaust(V&H Megaphones $250).

Ask Chef, but the head work is the most expensive and really only required for drag racing . Plenty fast enough with stock head in good shape.

The top end kit is $500 over the top of just re-ring and lap valves.

Cams are expensive unless you can find some others. I do have an OEM 1150 intake and 83 OEM 1100E exhaust (it is higher lift that pre 83) I was going to use but ended up going with the new stuff; Let me know on the cams sitting in a box at the moment.

I also added a top end oiler for about $250 with new pump ($95) on top of the oiler stuff that Chef has.

I'm not sure I'm ready to start dropping the $$ already or if I'm really going to have time to sort all this out in the winter. Sure would be nice to find an already built motor or a decent builder in my area lol.

Also, any info on putting an oilcooled GSXR or Bandit head on a GS1100?

Thanks for the link, lots of pics but pretty short on info. Also doesn't look like he is readily available for contact lol.

Thanks though!

From another site...
[Bertaut Racing. 6245 Westbank Expressway, Ste 62 Marrero, LA 70072 US. Phone: +1 504 450 7427 bob [at] bertaut.nocoxmail.com. ]

I think www.bertaut.com is more recent. He emailed me once (after I posted a question in an online m'cycle discussion group,) describing the 1150 cooler mod in detail.....this was a week after I bought this bike in '02, & I had no clue as to his 'celebrity', and would have been blissfully unaware, had he not included a link to his site.
Incidentally, he also turned me on to the GSR, by including a link to this site!:)

Tony.

Hmm his email address gets kicked back when I try to write him. Might be better to find one a bit closer to myself anyways. Thanks!

I do the GSXR head conversion to the GS bottom end all the time. Call me at 714-356-7845 & I can give you all the info you will need. Ray.

GSXR head on GS bottom

GSXR head on GS bottom

I converted my GS last winter and have run it for 9000km now without a sign of problem, just pleasure. I run it on the street, for weekend trips, vacation and some amature drag racing. Last wednesday I was running about 25 races against moderns Busas and a lot of other new RRRRRRR's. I won every race. My head is a -91 shim style with minor porting job. I also running 1166 JE flattop pistons, RS36 carbs and a Cope stepped header. I added a 48 plate Mesa Cool oil cooler with a thermostat because I was worried about the oil temperature but I think a smaller cooler as e.g. the 1150 cooler will be big enugh.

I can for sure recommend the head swap.

depends on how far away from a stock looking gs you want to go really ;) a good late complete oil cooled gsxr engine will give you a reliable 125-140 bhp before tuning & cost far less that a set of wiseco's, add to that a set of secondhand busa pistons (which the turbo busa boys are throwing away by the boat load) a bore job sort the deck height & you have a 1216 150+bhp unstressed engine which will easilly take a 50 shot of gas :D

I threw stock out the window about 9 months ago :-). Which GSXR head should I be looking for? Which year range? I'd really like to find an online resource on this but I'm coming up with nothing. What all is involved in the swap? I assume the GSXR head but do I need the pistons? Anything else? Would this be risky on an unwelded crank?

Sorry mate you hve the wrong idea about what i was saying there

I meant put the complete engine in your gs frame & work from there :D

If you have a look on lodskool suzuki theres a thread or 2 about gsxr heads on gs engines & loads on complete engine swaps, not done the head swap myself but have swapped engines many times if you need advice on that idea :)

How difficult is the complete motor swap? To be honest, I'd rather go that direction then worrying about my crank and all that jazz.

I'd guess you have to fab motor mounts, otherwise it would be too easy :-) Any info you can give me on this would be really appreciated.

If you want to modify for horsepower & do NOT want to weld the crank I suggest you look for a different bike as I don't recommend not welding a GS crank in even a STOCK rebuild. It is just too inexpensive not to do it & not worth the problems you could have without it. Like I said before, if you have questions about the conversion, call me. Ray.

Thanks for the offer Ray. I just really don't have the scratch to weld the crank right now, which is why a motor swap looks appealing. To be honest, these plans are probably a long way off as the bike is plenty of fun as it is now.
