If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

1980 gs550e fuel filter

Forum Sage
Any GS people tell me what type of fuel filter they used and where they got it ?
(UK really)
With the run around I had on my Kwak 750 this time
I wanted to ask if people who have em - where and what !

Such a simple thing but a few words could save me some time .....
Bike is standard carbs cv, air box , tank.

I expect some crank replies like get one off ebay for ?3
But I want someone with one who is happy with it .....
Flow rate .... Not linking .... Etc.

On my 750 kwak I had to use a 90 deg one
And a hotch potch of tubes .

Are you using the stock petcock? If so then the petcock has the filter built in. No need for an inline filter of any kind. If you do decide to use an inline filter, then make sure the filter is designed for gravity feed. Some filters are too restrictive and will cause running issues at higher demands.

Stock petcock on all my bikes.
Perhaps it is overkill and thinking the only issue I had was when the
petcock filter itself was damaged on two bikes.

My kwak has this , damaged petcock filter and 90deg fuel filter.
Runs fine now.

But on the wrecks I buy and have to chemically clean the tanks
I think I will on future ones use a filter just in case.
Cleaning jets continuously has lost its appeal in renovations !

As mentioned, if you insist on adding a filter make sure it is designed for gravity feed.

The easiest source for such a filter is at your local lawn mower supply store. Most mowers have gravity-fed fuel systems, so their filters will work just fine.

The biggest trick will be finding the correct size. Over here, our common sizes are 1/4" and 5/16", which are 6.25mm and 8mm. The stock fuel line on a GS is 7mm, which means that you will have to clamp it onto the 1/4" filter or STRETCH it over the 5/16" filter. If you have metric-sized filters, look for a 7mm, if possible.

.

Like the idea of the lawn mower shop ! Will check.

I was so hoping for a fellow gs owner to simply say buy this
One off eBay .......
Cheers for advice, I'll post back when I find one.

We have a small motorcycle shop not too far from here that sells "Emgo" reusable filters for motorcycles. They come in silver, blue, and red (I think), and they use a washable bronze filter and I think they were like $6.95 each. Ive been using the on my bike and a couple of my old atvs and they seem to work fine.

Wemoto has all kinds of filters, check here: http://www.wemoto.com/components/filters/fuelfilters

Some of those filters are sold by a pack, so pay attention to that, that is the price for a filter or a pack. I ordered a pack from them but missed the size (ordered 6mm, but my aftermarket fuel line was 8mm I guess...)... So now I picked a generic car filter from the local supermarket. The filter is labeled for diesel. The point is, that those car filters for gasoline have a paper element inside which dries out and clogs up, the diesel one does not though. I know that 'cause I tried the gasoline one first too. Mind you, that the Wemoto-filters I had ordered didn't have a paper element, and basically were built like this diesel filter I am using now, only smaller.
