    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1980 gs750 help Identifying with VIN

Yes I looked at the Home Page and cannot understand the page I am missing something. The VIN is gs75x-512277. Does this mean gs750 standard?

Can some who has ridden a 1978 GS750 with a 2 valve motor and a slightly newer GS750 with a 4 valve motor comment on the performance diffrence. I might buy this bike if I can get it cheap enough. It has 14,000 miles on it. I am just wondering if the extra 2 valves per cylinder is worth it?
 
GS's with VIN number GS75X-etc. have been produced in 1979/80/81/82/83. It's a 16-valver and the performance should be better than the 8-valve versions.
I know some of the members are riding the 16 valve GS750 (Simon Waters?). Perhaps they can give you some info on performance.

I'm confused. Are you asking about a 1978 GS750 or a 1980 GS750.

I think the 1978 is an 8 valve bike. I have a 1977 GS750B that is an 8 valve engine and I think the 1978 model is also 8 valves. I know that in 1981 Suzuki started using a different type VIN that didn't have the GSXXX in front of it. My Clymer manual says the 750's went to the TSCC 16 valve engine in 1980. My 1980 GS850 has the 8 valve engine also.

Chris, I think the 8 valve engine is a very good engine. In fact, I have read that it is preferred over the 16 valve engine for reasons that I cannot remember. As far as the model goes, good luck.

You're right Terry, the 1978/79/80 models are 8 valve types. The 16 valvers were introduced in 1981 (at least in Europe), if I remember well. I must have edited my post and didn't check, before submitting it :oops:
That still doesn't explain the VIN numbers in the chart. :roll:

As far as I know, the GS850 had only 8 valves. There is no 16 valve version... I think...

The story goes that the 8 valve GS versions were more reliable. I don't know if that story is true though.
 
The 2 valve motors all used shims for adjusting valves The 4 valve motors used adj rocker arms. The 2 valve 750 motors used the roller bearing crank, low pressure oil system and the later 4 valve motors used a plain bearing high pressure oil system. Just buy it and have fun
