DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I tried to buy a GS1000 from a riding buddy. He didn't want to sell. So instead he gave me this GS850 (thanks Dom). He bought it mainly for parts for the 1000 from a fellow here in Tennessee who bought it from someone who wrecked it in New York. Thankfully since the wreck in 2005 or so it has been stored indoors. I tend to like these ujm's stock or close. But this one has more missing than I want to replace, so Lord willing it'll end up being a mild custom. So far I have shimmed the valves, rebuilt the carbs (including repairing a broken float post), sourced a signal generator and hardware for the ignition, re-jetted the carbs (already had pods, but stock jets ), bought decent pods (APE) to replace what it had, and drained the oil pan, replaced that gasket and the stator gasket. I also bought REAL gaskets for the cam cover and breather cover. She runs but isn't charging.

I have three stators two which are oem but have ohms readings of about 11, so they're evidently bad. There is also an aftermarket one that looks great, but in all the moves around one of the leads was broken. I'm going to look at repairing that and if not may try my hand at rewinding one of the oem's. I have a busted up tail section. Another one off of a 750 that also is busted up. But I have a tail section off a Z1 that I may try and graft on, yes I know sacrilege :). I have one side cover that's banged up, a king and queen seat, and an ugly rattled canned tank with a good sized dent. I'm pretty sure that the speedometer isn't stock either as it has no fuel gauge.

I'm looking forward to getting her going again. Probably will be somewhat of a slow go. I appreciate any comments as I'm going.

David

Anybody know what this speedo came off of?

Almost forgot, I have a broken exhaust bolt on the #3 cylinder (and yes the one behind the frame). I've replaced the other bolts with studs, but looks like I'll have to pull the head to get the broken bolt out. It's flush with the head. I also found a center stand and put it on to replace the one that was missing. Gonna be fun!

Hi My name is Josh, i'm new to this forum...

i'm rebuilding a 1979 GS850 and i want a new exhaust system but the only aftermarket system i could find is a MAC 4-1 that i don't like. they also biuld a 4-1 system for the 750 that looks better but it says it doesn't fit 850s. the 850 system specs says it fits 1979 GS750 and 850. i saw on pipeburn a 1979 GS750 with that same system i want, my question is will it fit my 79' GS850 is there any difference? anyone more familiar with these frames?
