1980 GS850S Build

Sand blaster, gasket set, paint, paint gun...

Hahah for some reason I always picture ur dog talking when I read ur posts.. I have a german shepherd so it's all good. I'm not going to re gasket the whole engine just clutch, stator, and oil pan gasket for now. Engine was very low mileage. Is there any workaround for a sand blaster? I have so many parts and bolts I was planning on wire wheeling and then painting.

Chuck Hahn has one of those spot blaster guns that appeared to work nicely. For my money I'd build a blasting cabinet. It's a mess to have to constantly clean up blasting sand, plus the hazard silica can be to your health. He's also got a method to clean and repaint engines which doesn't involve sand blasting. Send him a PM.

A really cheap version for those smaller pieces...http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_19/412910_DIY_Low_Budget_Sand_Blasting_Cabinet.html

Larger version for doing frames and such. http://thegsresources.com/_forum/showpost.php?p=1459684&postcount=1

You are limited only by your imagination. Oh, and I sound nothing like the dog. ;)

thank you for the nice and very useful reply. To be honest I think I am going to really just try my best to prep everything because I will be spraying a lot of these parts black so I really think I can pull off good awesome job without blasting after looking at everything today. In fact I got the engine just about ready to have the cases split so I can throw in that kick starter.

EVen though it is low mileage 15k bike, I still cant believe how AWESOME these bikes are on the inside, my buddies GS850 with 100k miles looked identical to this one if not even better (when we split the cases ill take more pics), these engines are just so well built it never ceases to amaze me.

P.S. DOES anyone know if the gs1000 tank will go on this 850?

Watching this build. Looks good so far. I like the idea of the kick start.

As for the polaris r/r wish i woulda known before i ordered it. What are the main advantages of that Power box? I've seen his videos, and it seems cleaner but i dont know the actual advantage over the standard fuse box

I guess I need to reorganize some of the first posts in the SSPB threads to be clearer what the SSPB is for. Steve is correct that the SSPB is to provide better power distribution as this is a problem with most bikes including the GS have. But I think I should probably expand upon that introduction. :o

But rather than hijack your thread, I updated the first post in this thread. Hopefully this gives a more linear explanation of what the SSPB is all about. It is a little long, but in the interest of brevity I did just gloss over some important features (EMC/ESD/Load Dump)

P.S. and yes you should pick up an SH-775.

thought you may like to see this pic. It is a guy in Demoine Iowa who made a Cooley look alike out of a shafty also.

No, that just does not work....at all
The tank just does not have the lines for that paint scheme, neither does the side cover.
The only way to get a semi - sort of acceptable replica would be to BS the eye bye shading put some of the tank and side cover with clever application of some black.
I would give it a miss.

For some encouragement, Viper did this FANTASTIC rendition...

With some lower bars (clip-ons perhaps) and a cafe style seat, it might be close to what you are trying to achieve with your 850. ;)

is it me or is the blue a little bit light? The bags are awesome haha I would totally ride a bike like this although bits a bit too soft and friendly looking for my liking

the bike is very impressive, a little too much blue for my liking, however a nice piece!

Got the fairing from england looks awesome... I just need help mounting these badboys, im assuming these are the factory holes? i posted a thread on someone selling them in the WTS section... THe four lower holes with the arrows i believe are to have bracekts to the forks, and the rest ?????

Any of this look like oem holes to someone thats worked on mounting the fairing before?

I guess my question is are the top brackets supposed to support mirrors and than bolt down to the handlebars? or do i drill holes so the headlight ears go on... i can think of a few things but i just wanted to know what your "supposed" to do

You don't need to drill any other holes, if you are using mirrors like the "S" they bolt through the fairing with the 2 upper holes, they are 50MM center to center. If you are using different mirrors then this is the top mounting position for the fairing.

Did you find a screen yet?

With ALL of the Cooleys that are owned by members of this site, why can't several of them post some pictures for you?
