A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

a 1980 Suzuki GS850G wiring harness is mixed with a 1979 Suzuki GS850G. I was trying to install a 1983 Suzuki GS850L gauge cluster because mine didn't have one. I had the hardest time on trying to hook it up because the wiring on it was not matching the diagram for the 1980 until i looked at the 1979 GS850 wiring diagram. So if you are having to do any wiring on a 1980 Suzuki GS850G make sure the sticker on the motorcycle is actually made in 1980 because it could have a 1979 wiring diagram.

Does your bike have VM or CV carbs ???. If indeed it is a 79 it will also have points

Eric,

So, I gather that you no longer need the info you requested in previous post.

Lets explore if your 850G is actually a 79 or a 80 model. (not what year of manufacture date, but what model year).
- side panels have GS850 or GS850G emblem?
- like SqDancerLynn asks; are carbs the VM (tall thin tops with throttle linkage) or the CV (Flat diaphram housing on top)?
- headlight switch have an 'off' position, or just hi - low?
- headlight a sealed beam (convex lens, not removable sperated bulb) or halogen (flat glass, removeable H4 bulb) ?
- front brake disc solid or slotted ?
- And the big one: What does the tag on stering neck say, should have big printed letters for model year. ANd small stamped letter for date of manufacture.

Or are you saying that you definatly already know is is a 1980 model year? ..... but the schematic for 1979 matches better.

.

i've had similar issues identifing my year. I have a '79 GS850 i think but with some '80 GT parts.

I have a ' 79: kick start , left and right handle switches - high/low beam only, exhaust - no cross-over, headlight sealed beam, VM carbs.

I have '80 - slotted right front rotor, 5 fuse fuse box versus a 4 fuse fuse box, possible electronic ignition upgrade from points.

I think that's it.

I have a factory owners manual and it compares the differences between a '79 GS and a '80 GT.

I've heard that other manufactures use upgrades of the next production year on the previous year model when that bike went through the assembly line toward the end of the year - if this makes sense. For instance, if my '79 was assemblied in november or december and they put on some of the '80 upgrades for the upcoming year's model.

Could also be that your bike is a Jan-Feb '80 bike and Mr Suzuki used some '79 parts that were left over.:)
