i have a 1981 gs1100 the starter clutch went out and i took it in to be fixed. well the guy dint tighten the bolt on the end of the crank good enough and the next day the whole assembaly was spinning on the crank. i took it apart and i forgot a washer and cant find a diagram. i have that gold washer with notches as the 1st peice and then the bearings go in and i have the lock washer on the end of the crank. does any body have a good diagram or might no my problem. it started up and sounded like something rubbing. also are the torq specs on that nut on the end of the crank 125lbs? some one can email me to at seandoa@msn.com that would be cool to i havent figured out how this site works as this is my first time on it.

chain drive so i figured more out tonight. i had that nut on a 125lbs i loosend it up and the gear on the back of the starter clutch would rotate. it was so tight when it would fire up it would not disengage. and the grinding noise was my starter spining with the motor. it did start and work ok it was kinda loud but i fired it up for one second and there probaly wasnt much oil in it. so i dont know if i still have a problem with it the nut im sure is under 30lbs for it to work. and the mechanic fixed it i had the 3 sheered off bolts, and after that it just was spining on the shaft cause it was so loose. any ideas? thanks for getting back to me im stressed about it my girlfriend got a yamaha 650 to ride with me and im broke.

Sounds to me like you have the first washer on backwards,(part #10 on the diagram). The washer with what looks like notches in it. If you look closely, one side is flat, the other is curved toward the center. I think the curved side goes toward the engine, away from you as you put it on. If it is on backwards, your starter clutch will lock up. Also, I haven't had any luck just tightening the nut on the crank. Thoroughly clean the threads and use locktite or some other threadlocking agent.

thanks ill pull it back off. do you guys know of hand what size puller i need. i made a puller with claws and have been using that but i would like the right tool. ill switch that washer around and tighten that nut to 40lbs if that sounds right to you guys. i think ill have a couple rum and cokes to keep me warm in this cold minnesota weather while i work. how could you get me a starter clutch and work out the payment? what do you want for it? i almost wouldnt mind getting a new one.

its going to be on as soon as the snow melts i was going to test drive it down my dirt drive way tonight but it snowed alot and my drive way is a ice sheet. but ill put some oil and fire it up every day until i can get across the ice sheet for the first drive. last week my girl got her bike and we redid or shop and it was out side in snow and i was by my self trying to push the beast in and slipped on ice and got smashed under it. i got my buddies to help and got it in the shop and now its running ready to hit the streets. i like the power of it and i always held it shinny side up until i was getting towed to ride a few times this summer and i got yanked over a couple times durring towning but nother major happend. So hopefully now ill be rolling smoky burnouts all summer and i got a new challenge to beat. my dad got his harley sportser in the shop and is gonna roll out with about a 100hp and 130lbs of tork but im still talking **** cause this gs1100 moves.
