    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Alright my fellow GS owners. I picked up a pieces together, ****ty welded Pile of bolts. The PO said it didn't run and didn't know why. So I gave him some cheddar and hauled it home in hopes that it wasn't to beat up. Spent a week scratching my head trying to get it to actually run. This dude stripped the jets on the carb and had the pilot screws all the way screwed down. All in all it came to be the magnito (right side engine cover) to be the biggest issue. After the carb rebuild the it still wouldn't start and once I found the loose magnito and realigned it to how it is supposed to go the bike fired right up. I am new to making a forum thread but considering this thing is an entire rebuild I figured I would share my experience and troubles with fellow GS owners.

image.jpgHere it is the day I brought it home. As it looks almost whole I assure it isn't. Tank is sitting on here and the seat is held on by duct tape and a pipe clamp. Hopes and dreams and some ****ty craftsmanship were holding this together.
 
After ripping into the wire harness and finding a lot of things that needed correcting including crossed wires, the new harness is almost finished minus the lighting wires are still open. I have the tank sanded and it has some minor dents in it. Does anyone have any advice on getting the dents out or will they have to be bondoed over? I will get some pictures up as soon as I can.

That's an 1100L for sure. Not an 1100E. The leading axle forks, stepped seat and tank give it away.
 
As far as I know it could be an L. The title says E the motor says 1100. The PO or maybe past previous owners have chopped and diked this thing up. The tank mount is crooked and the ****ty welded tabs holding different crap in place tell me the guys were rather new to holding a welder. The tank is not original to the bike because they had to fab (term used loosely) a new mount to keep the take on. For all I know it's 3 bikes in one but I'll take your word for it being this is my first experience with a GS. Has anyone ever ordered a seat from motorcycleseatsdirect.com before?

Yep it definitely started its life out as an E, not sure what you guys are talking about on the forks? That is an E with an L tank you can actually see where the E tank used to cover near the stem. E motor that someone tried to make their own cosmetically. Definitely an E
 
No "E" came with leading axle front forks so at least the forks were changed. The tank is definitely a scabbed on "L". The headlight bucket is chrome so that's "L"ish as well. Can't tell, but the gauges look wrong for the "E". The area in front of the tank is usually covered with plastic trim panels. Hard to tell, but it looks like the two screw holes to hold the trim panel on are there. Again, the stepped seat is not stock but could have been fabricated to look like an "L". It may have started life out as an "E" but something prompted the conversion toward an "L". My guess is a previous front end encounter with a solid object and an "L" parts bike caused the transformation.

So this is not an accurate statement at all.... Sorry!

1980-81 had leading axle design without a doubt. The motor, forks, swingarm & peg brackets are all correct for being "1100E". The other L parts above the frame spine were obviously added later.

Hey good luck with your project. The foundation should be a great base for whatever you do with it as long as the motor is sound. "16 valve powah!"

I stand corrected on the forks. Always thought that the leading axle thing was "L" specific. That bike is still really cobbled up though... I'll go sit in the corner now.:o

Here are some more pictures for your enjoyment. The motor runs strong but I will still rebuild it, only because if the PO f***ed the other stuff on this bike that as bad as it was, no telling what corners were cut in the motor. And it is going to be off frame anyway in about a week. New gauges and lights and rebuild the suspension is in the near future. The current aftermarket gauges do not work and the wires have been clipped. Lots of work to come. I'll keep pictures coming as progress is made. Any advice on this build will be greatly appreciated.

Looks like the PO wanted an 1100 but without the lunchbox and square headlight.
 
Anybody have any experience with tank dents and how to fix? Bondo?
