    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1981 GS450 Swingarm question

I have a question, is it possible to mount a longer swingarm on the gs450 without any major mods? I need to get the bike a bit lower and longer on the tail for my bobber projekt. I have lowered the forks abt 1", so the total length might not differ to much. Saw a guy on youtube (bobberbob)that cut his swingarm, welded a tube outside his standard and prolonged it abt 3" or so. Looked awesome. If I don?t want to cut, is there any other models I just can use instead with the same effect? Any realistic and creative suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

PS. Any suggestions on other rear lowering? Don?t like cutting coils.
 
What about relocating the rear mounting point or installing shorter shocks?
 
Relocating the mounting point seems really difficult. Not much room forwards. Could use those blocks to move the lower mounting point, but they seem not to be available anymore.
Have you any pic of a moved upper mounting point?

Move the rear. Fabricate the relocating blocks yourself if necessary.

Does anyone know if there is any longer swing arm that fits the GS450 without any major mods? A GS550 ? A newer model? Aluminium? ANYTHING???
 
Anyone with a GS550 that could measure the swing arm?

I can, but I am going out now for the night. Will do it tomorrow maybe if I can get around to it. I have the swing arm out of the bike to be powder coated so shoiuld not be too much trouble.
 
OK. Here it is. I was not much good at tech drawing at school so excuse my amateurish drawing effort.

The total measurement from end to end is 530mm.

The measurement from centre of swing arm spindle bolt to centre of rear axle spindle (although this is a variable as the axle can move back and forth depending on the rear chain adjustment) is 470mm.

The width of the section of swing arm that has the spindle through it and fits inside the frame is 220mm wide.

My bike is outside now and the swing arm is mounted.
I will have it inside later this week and will remove it and measure.
It would be really sweet if it worked with a direct swap.

I need some help and advice on powder coating my frame and I will post that a little later on.

I plan to treat my frame with chassie black POR-15 since I don?t have a garage to totally disassemble my bike in. This first year will be to get that bike running and in OK condition. Next will be a rebuild and some welding as well before powder coating most parts. Would be nice to have a color other than silver or black, something that pops without screaming bad taste.
Or maybe a totally black bike and have a Hemi orange tank.

What about a hemi orange frame. and a bright yellow tank and side covers.
 
Don, measured the swing arm on the bike today and even though it was a bit hard to access the pivot part that was 220mm on your bike, mine seemed like 205 - 210 mm, but the length was almost identical. 460mm center to center and about 520mm total length. So I wouldn?t gain much by changing to a 550 swing arm.
Damn it.

I have seen some use a square aluminium one, I wonder which models had that??? I have to check http://www.suzukicycles.org/All-Suzuki/all_suzuki_models.html to find that out.
Why can?t things just be easy and bolt on???
Maybe because we wouldn?t learn anything by that...

Maybe I will have to check with BobberBob from Sydney that I talked to via his link at Youtube. He extended his swing arm by welding. His bike looks really symmetrical.
