    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1981 GS750E and 1983 GS750E Donor

I have arranged to pick up a 1983 GS750E rolling chassis with the balance of the bike in boxes. Looks like the engine is complete. The donor bike comes without a title and I bought it on speculation that I could use some of the parts for upgrades and or spare parts for my 1981. Which parts would be an upgrade? My 1981 forks were ready for a rebuild for sure, so would I be better off to rebuild the 1983 forks and swap them out? Any other ideas would be welcomed.

The 83 forks & 16 inch wheel will help the handling a LOT! Keep the rocker arms from the 83 as they will interchange but other than those & the rear wheel I don't know if much else will work on the earlier 750. The carbs will work also if needed. I like the instrument cluster from the later bike too! It looks cleaner to me. Ray.

Thanks Ray. Thats great news about the front end. Do you suggest any new parts such as bearings when I swap the front ends?

Another thing is the donor bike comes with an old 4 into 1 exhaust which I would like to try out.

It sounds like I may have some parts for sale to post later.
 
Yes, DEFINITELY change the bearings when you swap the forks. I would also do a complete disassembly, cleaning, & new fork seals all at once. Saves more work later. Ray.

The bike parts arrived late last night .. I will get the bearings ordered.

Another couple questions if anyone has time.

There is an oil cooler on the 1983 engine, (looks stock but I havn't had time to read up on it yet) could that be adapted to the 1981 ?

The 1983 parts bike came with a beat up 4 into 1 header .. would it be a direct bolt on my 1981 ? I tried to figure it out from Z1 website looking at V & H exhausts .. but am not sure.

Us new guys really appreciate your help.
 
The oil cooler won't be easily adaped to the earlier model. The oil pan has oil galleys temp sensitive valving that bypasses the filter and cooler until the oil pressure lessens (due to warming up). So unless you can bolt the pan and all associated pieces straight up the the older model, the best you could do is find some kind of adapter plate for the oil filter cover that would allow you to channel oil from there up to the cooler.

I use both depending on where they are going, and which bike-

My 89GSX1100F I use Alls Balls all over it, it is not a race bike, and it does see alot of travel time.

My 2000 GSX1300R turbo bike is, I use All Balls on the sterring head, but Ceramic or OEM for the wheels (greasable).

IMHO:

Wheels = OEM
Steering head = All Balls
