    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have the opportunity to purchase a 1980 GS750EX (16 valve) for a reasonable price. Does anyone have any experience with this bike, and what to look out for? Not much info on the web. --Brian

ps. btw, bike is a 1981...
 
i own a 1984 gs750es , and i love it. excellant bike, i dont know how different the 1980 is from the 84 tho but mine has the 16v engine an it is FAST.
 
1981 GS750EX

Well I bought the beastly GS. Paid $700, then spent another $700 putting in good shape. Runs and looks great, and it IS a rather fast thing ;-).

Rebuilt carbs with K&L kits (all gaskets, o-rings and jets -- rocks!) $88
Rebuilt fuel petcock with K&L kit -- again very cool. $18
Cleaned and Kreamed tank -- $30
Replaced stator & RR with Electrex. $260 + $6 gasket @ Suzuki dealer
Added ground strap to RR -- factory ground sucks. All connections crimped and covered. (Electrex badmouths Suzuki wire color scheme, then doesn't bother to explain proper wiring [ie. 1 of 3 phase legs routes through headlight switch.] I chose to bypass switch and connect all legs direct to RR).
Replaced battery with Yuasa to insure condition. $38
Replaced coils, signal generator, wires with Dyna. $250
Dyna wire plug caps DO NOT fit plugs -- replaced with NGK 5K caps. $13
Still to do - fork seals (leaking), tires, chrome, case polishing, riding.

Would appreciate any advise on following:
1) What tires work the best on this bike -- so much to choose from!!
2) Are NOS or reproduction stator & signal generator cover decals available?
3) Did anyone make a custom windshield for this bike? Any decent universal windshields?
4) Anyone have complete factory specs on this machine and/or 1981 Cycle mag 750 shootout specs?

BTW, do not use bullet connectors that come with Electrex stator -- they are not same as OEM and when plugged in allow exposed metal that could short against something. I recommend splicing with butt connectors and enclosing with protective heat shrink tubing (or 3M 33+ tape).

Also RR9 had wrong connector for this bike (block vs. bullet). Cut it off and spliced.

3) Did anyone make a custom windshield for this bike? Any decent universal windshields? Yes, check out JCWhitney, Dennis Kirk, and Airtech

4) Anyone have complete factory specs on this machine and/or 1981 Cycle mag 750 shootout specs? Maybe Focus Frenzy or check out http://www.suzukicycles.org/
 
A highly protective windshield is a National Cycle Plexifairing III. It flares over the hands and goes down the tubes, providing excellent rain and wind protection. You can order one through a dealer or buy it from mail-order houses. About $150.

I had this windshield on three of my four GS850G's. Good product and fits well. Should fit your 750 just fine.

If you have a GS750EX you have a 1981 model...the 1980 model was the GS750ET...not a lot of difference between the two...I believe the petcock is different, the pinstripping is a little different, and some other very minor details.

Tires - Metzler ME55 & ME33!

Dyna wire caps work with the plugs when you screw the little tops on the plugs.

The stator and pickup cover emblems are no longer available from Suzuki (unless they've made a new production run). They were superceding the numbers with different emblems for a while, so just be aware that Suzuki may say that they are available, but you might not get the one you want. Finding them on Ebay would be the best route.

There are a lot of good plexiglass fairings available. Try to get one with a little style (not a flat barn door that stands straight up and down): the contoured ones do a better job of smoothing out the air.
 
Ron Ayers has the magneto and stator covers for 7.50 each. That's the best 15$ that can be put into an old Suzuki. You'll have to call your local dealer to get the part numbers. RA doesn't have any microfiche for old bikes...I called them today.

The Dyna wire caps are sized to fit large spark plug body (yes, with threaded on contact sleeve). The plugs in this bike are skinny -- the dynas do not stretch over ribbed section of porcelain, they swim (read large gap for water to go in to dilute (HAAAAAA) your spark during humid weather). The NGK XD05F cap is sized for skinny plugs (w/o threaded on sleeve).

My bad on original inquiry -- thought bike was 1980 when it is in fact 1981 (much to my pleasant surprise!).
