As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

1981 GS850G Carb Issue

I have a GS850 which has been sitting for about 6 years. I bought a different carb set from a running bike and it starts with the choke on and runs between 3000 and 4000 rpm for about 2 minutes. The idle then slowly goes down, not right away, but about after another minute it final chokes and dies. If I pump the trottle I can keep it running. It will not start if the choke is not on.

Does this provide any details to anyone that could pinpoint what the issue could be. I am not a carb expert by any stretch so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Starting with choke is normal if the engine isn't already warm.

A lot of things have to be right for the bike to work well, but once they're right, it will be reliable. Have you adjusted the valves, sealed the intake and rebuilt the carbs? Are there any non-stock intake or exhaust parts? Is anything missing form the intake system? These new carbs came from another 850?

Don't mean to post a dumb question. But since putting on the new carbs have you adjusted the main idle? could be as simple as that.

Both of those answers are correct, but not quite complete.

The carbs have to be cleaned and have new o-rings installed.

.

I have not adjusted the valves. I have made sure the seal for the intake and the boots are good. I have not rebuilt or cleaned the carbs yet. To my knowledge and from what I have been told everything with the carbs and exhaust is stock. Nothing is missing from the intake system. The carbs came off a running 1982 GS850G. It was not on the rode but it was running. THanks very much.

I have adjusted the main idle and that is actually what got me to the place where it is running now. Thanks.

Rebuild the carbs properly if you care about making the bike reliable.

I have not adjusted the valves.
This is high on the list of first things to do to a "new" motorcycle.

I have made sure the seal for the intake and the boots are good.
Did you just spray something over them or did you replace the o-rings?

I have not rebuilt or cleaned the carbs yet.
Also very high on the list of things to do.

To my knowledge and from what I have been told everything with the carbs and exhaust is stock.
Some quick pictures will help confirm that.

Nothing is missing from the intake system.
Again, pictures would confirm that.

The carbs came off a running 1982 GS850G.
They have different "choke" activation systems, but the old one can be put on the "new" carbs.
Still is no guarantee that the carbs are in good shape.

It was not on the rode but it was running.
In other words, you have no idea how they really work.
