Could some of you 650g owners check you bikes and see if this is the type of clearance you have. I have a size 10ee foot and am haveing a hard time consistently shifting. My 450e has 5" of clearence and is an ease. I wondering if something is bent or missing. Thank for your efforts.

Charlie,

My 82 gs650gz measures 4 5/8 at the same place as you are measuring. Mine is pretty straight and even all the way across. Yours looks like it is tilting in. maybe you need new bushings?

Just put new rubber bushings on, it had no effect. I was thinking bent shifter or the wrong one. What do you think?

It is hard to tell from pic, but it appears that the footpeg isn't quite perpendicular to bike, slanting forward. The shifter looks like it could have a little more bend than stock, near the motor. It is possible the shifter rod is bent back, but I think that would be more apparent.

I also have 4 5/8 inches as you have measured.

mine measures 4 1/2 inches. just to look at it your shifter looks bent

The pegs do tilt forward of perpindicular. I can't figure how anything on the pegs could be worn or bent to cause this. Are yours tilted forwarded. The shifter I could bend a bit, to get 41/2". I was trying to find out what the stock distance and tilt might be. Thanks!!

They are folding pegs, correct? The metal that stops the peg when your weight is on it wears away, so it moves down and forward too far.
You could weld a washer or something in there to relocate the peg.

Also that looks like the wrong shift lever, looks too far away from the engine. Maybe the correct lever comes forward at less of an angle?
Just a guess. Alas, I have no 650 to look at. I did look at several bikes in the garage, on all of them the rubber part of the shifter is lined up with the inboard end of the peg, yours is much farther outboard.

They are folding pegs. If I raise the pegs to bring them to perpindicular, they are considerably above level to the ground. This makes me doubt it's wear. :idea:I just went out to the garage and placed a rubber malet on there shifter and smacked it with a heavy hammer. I bent it so I now have 41/2". I'll see tomarrow if that is any better with the shifting. Hope I didn't break something. Thanks all.

As usually, this carpenter fixes it with a biggger hammer!
:D No hammer marks!!!

Heres a pic of mine. I got a 1981 GS650 GL. I wear a size 11D shoe and my shifter fits my foot good. One thing I noticed in the pix is that my shifter where it bolts onto the shaft looks to be farther inboard than yours. There is a groove in the spline where the bolt lays in on mine. Have to agree with tkent the shifters dont look the same.

Thanks for the picture Dave. I at least know 4 1/2" is about what I should have. Your 650Gl has different peg mounts than my G. Your mount stradles the peg, whereas mine the peg stradles the mount. Would be intersting to see a picture of another 650G.

The peg mounts were changed from 81 to 82, Dave's GL looks like my G, I am pretty sure they are the same, same part number at least.

I am a little concerned that you are correcting this with a blow from a heavy hammer:eek:, the shifter is probably stronger than the shaft that it connects to.

Waterman,

I'm a bit concerned about smackin it also. Road it about 50 miles,on some twisties and I had two miss shifts at first, but toward the end of the ride I did fine. Machine or opperator? Who knows...? Just keep my fingers crossed. I think I do alittle part number reasearch to see what I might have on my bike. I think it's been dropped once because the bars were bent and and the case saver mounts on the left side were broken. Someone could have changed parts and gotten the wrong ones, or made do? Thanks for checkin back.
