1982 GS1100GL - Looking for carb refurb kit

Argee

Forum Apprentice
Hi All - I've finally got back onto the site having fallen foul of the 6 month deactivation policy.

I have a 1982 GS1100GL, and I need to give its carbs some TLC.

Can anyone recommend a good company to supply all the bits to do the refurb?

Many thanks, and Happy New Year to you all,

Argee

Thanks Cowboy Up!

I had wondered if I would need to replace the jets as I don't think the carbs have been touched since they came out of the factory. Do you think I would need to replace them?

Argee

Nope and in fact "carb rebuild kits" will contain parts that will fail on you. Just follow those cleaning procedures to the letter and you'll be fine.

"kits" = bad parts/wrong parts.

no need to replace anything 'cept o-rings and CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN

I have gaskets and spare parts.
Let me know if you need anything.

Thank you CowboyUp and BarnBikeTom for your wise words, and thank you Chef for your kind offer - I'll let you know if I find any broken bits that need replacing!
Best I order some O-rings, gaskets and carb cleaner!!

Hi Mr. Argee,

So now you know. Do NOT buy aftermarket "carb kits" because they are incomplete and contain inferior parts. If any of your internal carb parts are broken or worn, use only OEM replacement parts because they just work. Get an O-ring kit from http://cycleorings.com and follow the cleaning/rebuilding guides. Now here's your "mega-welcome" S.W.A.G. :)

If you are here you probably have a 30 year old motorcycle that needs about 20 years worth of maintenance. You'll find all kinds of helpful tips, procedures, manuals, diagrams, "how-to" guides, etc, in the links below. Let's get started.

Thanks BassCliff for the re-welcome! Your website is a very welcomed and valuable resource - Thank you!!:D

All my Gaskets and O-Rings have now arrived and I need to pick up some carb dip next, and hope for some warmer weather!

I did pick up some of the stainless steel replacement fasteners with my O-Ring order, and I am slightly confused as I thought there would be 4 per carb. Having checked the CycleORings website, it clearly states that there should be 2 fasteners per carb........................Are the fasteners supposed to replace the ones that hold all 4 carbs onto the gang bar rather than, as I had thought, the ones that hold the CV caps in place? :-k

Oh - I did read that it is worth replacing the intake boots that the carbs fit into as I understand that they eventually become brittle and cause intake leaks. I wouldn't be surprised if mine are a bit leaky. Can anyone advise me where I could get some replacements?

Many thanks for all your advice - as usual!

Thanks Londonboards - They're not as cheap as I'd've hoped though! Oh well!

Give my best to my home county!

Hi,

Have a look.

Air Intake Repair:
Airbox removal, intake boots and O-ring replacement

The fasteners you get from Robert Barr are for holding the intake boots to the head.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Thanks BassCliff - another great article, and my question answered!

Out of interest, where did you get your new carb boots from?

Thank you for indulging me,

Hi,

Out of interest, where did you get your new carb boots from?

I usually buy most of my OEM parts from partshark.com. Between them and Z1Enterprises.com most of my needs are covered. The intake boots for my bike are not cheap, but I won't have to replace them for another 25 years or so. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

Mission Accomplished! Thanks all!

Mission Accomplished! Thanks all!

A big 'thank you' to you all for your advice and recommendations.

I've just finished overhauling my carbs. It didn't take too long really - a few hours over 2 days.

I used the Cycleorings.com kit, with the extra fuel drain O-rings, the intake boot O-rings (mine were so flat that they didn't look anything like O-rings!!), and the intake boot stainless steel fasteners. I used the fuel bowl gaskets from Z1Enterprizes.com. I also picked up 32 stainless allen-key bolt (M5 x 16mm with split washers) to fit to the fuel bowls and the CV covers.

Ed Ness' and John Bloemer's guides were fantastic! Thanks guys!

The only dramas that I had were accidently dropping the air screw, washer and spring of my first carb into the carb dip outside of the basket:eek:, and having a struggle with a damaged air screw head on the last carb. I managed to extract it with the aid of WD40, heat from a hairdryer, and lots of hope. I carefully cut a new, deeper slot in it with a thin hacksaw blade.

I just went for my first ride of the year. Apart from being a bit chilly, it was great - the carb overhaul has made a huge difference!:D

There was one other things that no one mentioned and that is the rubber bungs in one of the float bowl tubes. I'm sure you came across them. They should be nice a pliabe and be able to hold themselves in if you turn the carbs upside down. Loose ones will leak internally. Buy OEM or suffer this:
