1982 GS550L Transmission Ratios

I'm pretty good at asking questions I'm two steps away from figuring out myself, usually making me feel semi foolish when I realize I've been missing the answer by thismuch all along.

That being said...where can I find the transmission ratios for my '82 550L? I'm trying to use an online calculator to get a feel for potential sprocket changes.

I've checked BikeCliff's site, I've googled, I've looked in one of my manuals (I'll check the other tonight), I've tried a ton of different combos searching this site...I just can't find them. Any help?

That helps a bit. It gives me 3 and 4 for sure, but my working knowledge of transmissions is very low. It looks like it's still missing a bit of info (first gear, second and sixth drive gear, etc.)

If I knew what went with what, I could just count teeth, but that's about at the end of my list. Like, past not doing anything.

34-1 and 34-2 are the 6th gear ones, while 20 looks like #2

They're one half of each. I know I need both an input and output shaft gear for each, and it's likely that some of them are shared (#3 drive gear on #2 & #3 driven gear), but I'm not sure how it works. It's possible all the info is there, and I just don't know how to use it.

What about the primary drive ratio? I can't seem to find that number either.

Your primary drive ratio is the number of teeth on the front sprocket divided into the number of teeth on the rear sprocket. It appears the front OEM is 15 teeth, but I could not find a number for the rear.

No, I know the final drive is 15/49. There's another number, I believe it is the crankshaft/countershaft ratio. The numbers don't add up when I just put a 1 in that box. It says I'll be turning 6000rpm at 52mph in 1st gear.

I'm using this calculator :http://www.bikerenews.com/Stories_Archives/GearRpmSpeedCalculator.htm but I can't seem to get it to provide reasonable numbers. It appears that the Primary Drive is somewhere around 2, as things line up pretty well, but I'd just like to get a more definitive number.

According to http://gs-classic.de which unfortunately is in german, you should have a primary ration of 1.978:1.

All this information is in the factory service manual, available for download from basscliff's web site.

The gear ratios are slightly different for the different models, for example, the L model ratios are different than the E model ratios, and they may also be different for different years.

The factory manual has tons of spec info, including the primary drive info, so look up the specific year and model bike you have and get the real info for your bike. Info posted on the internet may or may not be correct so best to get the info straight from the service manual, or parts book like scott posted.

That's what I was referring to in the first post. Basscliff's site was the first place I looked, and I completely missed that he had the service manual for my year. I saw the E manual, for 1983, but didn't see the correct one directly below it.

So, thank you. I knew the answer was in an easy location, and just couldn't find it. My bad.
