    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Does anyone know the torque? I also need a new one , any good place for parts?
 
Do you mean the valve cover? Finger tight, and a quarter turn. Or until it strips, whichever comes first.

Its a valve cover but not called that, I dont want to strip bolts which im afraid already are

Hi Mr. Scubieman,

There is a vendor list in your "mega-welcome". My personal favorite vendors are partshark.com and z1enterprises.com. Vendors like partnmore.com and gssuzuki.com have really good prices on some items. Do some comparison shopping, including shipping, to get the best bang for your buck.

There is a manual on my website. It will have all of those torque specs. If I remember correctly, 6 - 7 ft. lbs. is the torque for the valve cover bolts using the stock gasket.

You might find a few things of interest on my little website. ;)

It's the valve cover. The part that covers both cams. It's crack so It lifts up on one side allowing oil to come out by the cams.

The term online is cylinder cam cover.

Yes, many parts for these old bikes are NLA. I've found many parts on Ebay. You can also check the Parts for Sale section and post up your need in the Parts Wanted section. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding one. Make sure you get the correct cover. There was a change sometime around late '81- early '82. The 16 bolt cover was replaced with the 19 bolt cover.

If the crack isn't too bad, it may be possible to use JB Weld to repair it. Fill the break, let it dry, sand it smooth.

As I stated before: Make sure you get the correct cover. There was a change sometime around late '81- early '82. The 16 bolt cover was replaced with the 19 bolt cover.

So count the bolts in your cover. The cover I linked to on Ebay is a 16 bolt cover.

Alright, I decided having a local shop weld it.

Where can I get the gaskets from? What do I all need?

How do I put it back on? Should I put goop between engine portion and gasket then gasket to valve cover.

I am not new to engines. I just prefer to get this done once and stop this stupid oil leak..

I believe what is happened is with the crack it is not applying enough pressure to outside of cover causing it to leak.

For valve cover gaskets, try eBay, Z1, PArtShark, etc. A valve cover gasket should not be hard to find.

You don't need any "goop" on that gasket. Maybe a tiny bit of grease to help keep it in place. If your breather cap gasket is mangled, you'll need one of those.
 
The factory manual says between 6 and 8.5 foot pounds.
Don't DARE go over 7 ! (84 inch pounds.)

These allen head screws are 40mm long. Longer than the factory ones for a reason. ;)

I was going to weld it but the people welding did not think it would work. I will be ordering a new part and new gasket. I have so much goop to try and stop the oil leak but its still leaking....but being this is south dakota it will start cooling down in a little over a month so not much I can do.
