DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I ran a compression test while the bike was cold

#1 cyl - 111
#2 - 109
#3 - 105
#4 - 105

The engine hasn't been run in a while (14 years) and i plan on running the test today after the bike has been warmed up.
I don't have any idea where the numbers should be so i was hoping somebody might be able to help.

Retest with warm engine and holding throttle wide open. Your numbers are consistent which is a good sign. You might want to verify valve clearances first for obvious reasons.

General rule of thumb is 150psi = excellent, 125 = okay, 100 and below = not good.

thanks

thanks

I thought 150 was a good target but wasn't sure. I will run it later.

here's the deal

here's the deal

AFTER A 2 MINUTE WARM UP I RAN ANOTHER TEST

#1- 121
#2- 111
#3- 120
#4- 120

This bike sat a long time so i am happy to have these numbers.. i will have the valves checked soon because i dont think they had been adjusted in a while. this may help get the numbers up too...Thanks for your time.

I have 125 lb across all 4 on my 79 850 it runs great. With those #s I would not worry & just work on other problems

this bike sat for 14 years in a shop and collected dust. i was excited about getting it started. i have a huge list of restoration projects but just to get it running is HUGE!!!! thanks for the info.....the engine sounds good but still battling the carbs.

I bought two bikes that spent a LONG time in storage - 20+ years for one of them. I didn't even try to get the bike running until I completely rebuilt the carbs, replacing all the various O-rings, the intake pipe O-rings, air filter, valve adjust, etc. Saves a ton of time in the end to just take care of business on the front end...

yes yes yes

yes yes yes

i used the carb rebuild guide. i have a huge list of things i need for this resto but i wanted to see if it would run before i spent anymore cash on it.:-|

The compression #s are good. Now concentrate on electrical and carbs.

The numbers seem fine. Sort the rest of it out as you need to.
