Well see how it runs with the ZX9 :)

Carbs are done. Trying to get the valve cover off to dump some oil onto the cams. Wont budge.

Once i get them oiled i can try to fire it. Pray it has spark.

I picked up a 4-1 header at the local cycle yard. Ill clean it up and heat wrap it. Just need a nice muffler now....Oh and the fairing!

I cant believe how clean it is under that dust.....I'm loving this bike more and more.

All. Original.

looks good, just make sure you got all the bolts out. I would probably pull all the plugs and crank it for a while. Good idea on the cams as well.

If you are going to run it for any amount of time you need to put something on the intake. If it is pods you should rejet using the DJ kit. 3133 using 132's and 47.5 on the pilot jets.

with 111 hp and 525 lbs, it will not keep up with that ZX9

Ended up just having some gasket shelac on it. Sticky stuff.

It did fire up. Like you said needs filters. I ordered a set of red UNI filters. Is the DJ needle necessary? I may just buy the jets instead.

May not keep up with the ZX, but it will sure as hell out-comfort it....

The good thing about the red uni filters is you don't need the DJ kit. You do need to rejet so you don't burn some valves but it will never run right so the DJ needles are not needed.
Edit : I was being a little deceptive; the color of the unifilter does not matter

The proper thing to do is buy a DJ 3133 kit, k&n or equiv pods and the 47.5 pilot jets

1. Having now been thru it with the charging system, believe everything folks here tell you. I followed the stator & RR paper directions after mine fried (probably wouldn't have if I'd been proactive) and now charging system <knock on wood> is working great. I don't even keep it on the trickle charger anymore!

2. Your case guards are trick! Mine has the same ones I put on my first one (new off the showroom floor).

3. You can still pick up GS550ES fairing lowers from dealers online, but you'll need to take a dremel to the inner edge against the valve covers and give it some curve for clearance. Other than that they work great. Mine came with a set of Lockhart lowers but I've taken them off for now.

4. Look forward to following your progress.

Does the DJ kit not come with 47.5 pilots?

My 82' had hellacious charging issues. Hope this one doesn't give me the same grief.

No there are no pilot jets in teh DJ, that is why I said to get them.

You know what they say about Hoping/Wishing............. Wish in one hand and $hit in the other and see which fills first.

Follow GS Charging Health and you will dramatically improve your chances. Get a SERIES R/R (e.g. Compufire) and you will have the best chance with probably no more charging issues. Generally I would recommend a SH-775 (for cost) but for a ED/ESD the Compufire is the way to go. Pricy but it will save your stator and will fit in the stock position with a little persuasion. (see my thread):)

I hear ya. I have a Mid 2000's GSXR reg. laying around that i threw on. Should work out.

Which model compu-fires are ideal for the bike?

there is only one and it is listed in the link

Voltage Regulator For Compu-Fire? 3Phase System

Number:CF55402
Manufacturer:Compu-Fire?
Weight:1.50 pound(s)
In Stock:0
List Price:$203.99
Our Price:$173.39
You Save:$30.60 (15%)

Finally bucked up and bought that regulator. Got 122.5 main jets installed (Equiv to DJ 132 & V&H recommendation) and have 47.5's on order. Pods should be here early this week. Also have a fairing coming my way. Its getting closer and closer.

You still need the needles or it will have a mid range bog if you have a 4:1

Well i will just have to see how it runs. I ride at about 6-7000 ft, and i'd imagine those uni's will be slightly more restrictive than a mesh K&N.

This bike really is not perfect but i'm trying my best to make it a dependable RIDER. Saving all original parts and throwing some aftermarket into the mix.

Painted and wrapped the header and installed it on the bike. Bolts up and clears perfectly, only one thing. It points right down the middle of the bike.

Anyone familiar with this pipe design as to the brand? I may have to get creative with a muffler. Either way, it sounds beautiful. A bit more "high perf" sounding than the old 8 valve.

Heres some pics for now.

BTW thank you for the help Posplayr.

Heres a vid of it running. Don't bash the no pods ;) Buddies drag bikes run unharmed without them.

Thanks looks like a Yoshi Race header; that is why it comes right down the belly.

Did yoshi's come chromed?

When i bought it it was chrome/rust. Got it real cheap too....

Look at the pictures I posted and look on the header collector for numbers staring with "SU"

I think they came in all combinations but I have not seen the chrome race header. It should be larger OD down tubes. (over 1 1/2" )

Bike sounds good :dancing:

I checked it out before painting it and couldn't find any stamping. It does have large down tubes and a big collector.

You dont have any leads on a muffler for one do you?

Thanks :D
