    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1983 gs650 gl all power lost

Nyone have any ideas what could have caused this ? Driving my 650 down the rd doing 100 & bam all electrical power shuts off !!
Come to a coasting stop managed to get it to the side of the road.
Pull seat off and I see right away my main fuse is blown , luckily I had a few fuses , so put another in and turned the key and I had power again ...
Put her in gear and get into second gear and bam .. all power gone again !!
Stopped again and inspected wiring grounds etc , tried another fuse and it litterlay melted the second it touched both contacts ...
Pushed the bike home 8 km .....
Im assuming I have to look over all wiring tomorrow .but its just the main fuse that keeps blowing and it happens right away as soon as you put the fuse in andthis Iis happening when the key isnt even in the ignition and the on switch is on OFF ...
Any suggestions appreciated ..
 
Your R/R or your wiring technique is defective

Approx 1 hr before this happened , my right turn signal would stay lit when indicator switch was flicked to turn right , the frint indicator light would stay lit , the rear wouldnt light up at all ...
So I checked wiring at rear right indicator lite , and found the plastic around the wire at the frame had worn down to the wire , and as soon as I pulled the wire away from the frame the light turned on and began blinking ..
Because I was running late for an apt . I just wrapped it with electrical tape ..could a wire grounding out cause this ??

The R/R output is always connected to battery positive, good diodes block things when bike is off, but a bad diode can act as a short circuit and blow main fuse. I don't remember what you are using for R/R and how you wired it in. disconnect R/R completely and see if main fuse still blows.

Edit; how was your 650 clunk at 100 ?

Thxso much Tom ill disconnect the R/R tonite .after I pick up a handfull ofnew fuses .. lol those little buggers would light up instantly !! Went through 5 .
As for the clunk your referring to .. after doing an oil change and adjustments to the clutch cable. And replacing the tach cable , that noise was no longer presant .. :confused: thx for the suggestion Tom ill let you know how it works out..

You hit the nail right on the head Tom !! You sure know your stuff !! Once again you figured it out for me ..
Ground wire to the rectifier is cooked so is the rectifier hole burnt right into the R/R
 
Seems to be that time of year for blowing r/r's :( You may want to check your coils are still intact.

Thx .. threw in my old R/R just to see what would happen , if my fuse would light up right away again , and it didnt .. so ordering the sh-775 I purchased that R/R not even 2 months ago ... that will be the last time I believe some parts guy about what r/r should work !! Oh well live and learn ... :rolleyes:
 
Best to inspect your stator wires and look for signs of baking- hopefully the main fuse saved things by blowing. Get a SH-775- you can transfer it to the gs1000 later b4 you sell the gs650. For the latter, pick up a honda style shunt R/R (will have markings like SH-***) - they are very reliable and billions sold; probably scoop one off ebay (or your junkyard wizard) for less than $20

Thx alot Tom !! ? Have you ever scene a ground wire to a r/r just melt away like that ? & burn a hole right into the r/r , bottom of r/r was just crumbling appart !! The only thing left to the ground wire was the eye hook and 1/2 " of wire .... :eek:
 
Hey Tom .. wondering if you could suggest something a little off topic ? On the gs 1000 , a few days after purchasing it , I had a petcock issue which drained myentire tank , flooding the entire crankcase and Iim gunna assume cylinder head too .. issue resolved ! But I have takin the gs 1000 out for a few runs and every time after turning the bike off smoke seams to come out of the muffler pipes?? Likeany oil that flooded a cylinder head and leaked into the exhaust pipes , should of been cooked off after running the bike afew times , dont you think ? Any suggestions as to what itmight be or what I can check ??
And yes I did aoil and filter change after the petcock issue ...

Nice looking R/R ! Anyways,make sure your petcock is working correctly-it might have failed after your first fix (?) and is dribbling fuel into crankcase when you're sleeping!
Yes, I would think any fuel remnants would have burned off with some running.

Thx . Ill pull the tank and allow it to sit over a drain pan over nite , to see if it leaks at all , in both the on and res positions and go from there .. thx again
