1983 GS750E- Retro Rocket Build

  • Thread starter Thread starter Busafied
  • Start date Start date
here's a video from today, it was blowing black smoke once I cleared the miss, the bike straightened right up and was smooth.
I need some pods, or to mod the stock airbox to work in this frame/ motor combo.

I have the following list to work off:

*Gas tank to mod for clearance (will have to be notched & new petcock location -TBD).
*Have the cables that need to be sorted -
*Shifter to work out.
*Front motor mounts should be done today hopefully after my nap.
*Rear brake caliper needs replacing- (have a spare for my 86 gsxr's that should work.

Long ways to go, but slowly getting there.
I am aiming more for the Spring ride with this project, but only time will tell

More progress with the Project Bike:

*Fabricated the Mono shock brackets (top/bottom)
*Mounted a new Shinko 180/55-17 tire on the gixxer wheel, it had a Dunslop 190/50-17.
Chain was slightly rubbing on the 190, after the test ride on the 180 it was rubbing slightly again, will make adjustments on the motor spacers and the rear sprocket as needed.
*Test rode the bike Saturday (yes I forgot my helmet - only been riding 27 yrs no excuses here)
The bike is DEFINITELY Improved (a hand full) as you can see in the video.
No clutch action, just flick of the wrist and she gets up and goes-

Video Tells all-

Items to be completed:

*Gas tank Modified to clear Carbs
*Pods ordered and installed.
Probably going with some Uni filters I have found.
*Fabricating a new mid pipe to follow the body lines, and take the can up high on the side.
*Everything taken back apart for painting, powdercoating, etc etc.

Comments????????

I used to have this bad habbit as well when test driving.......

Untill a friend of a friend went for a test drive around the block after some minor adjustments and never came back. :(

I love this thread....keep it up!!

Managed some more work today (took advantage of a vacation day)

Started here with an idea..

e1.jpg

Picked some stuff off my trusty rusty shelves, and got busy.
I used my old OEM 2000 Hayabusa mid pipe and can assembly for parts n pieces..

e2.jpg

I placed the can up and some pipe, and pictured how I wanted it in my head and how it could actually be-

e3.jpg

The I went to the Electrical supply house and got (2" EMT) a bent 90*elbow, and a 45*- already had one 45*

managed to make it work with (2) 45* 's/

e4.jpg

Tacked the Hayabusa clamp and Hayabusa flange on it and finished up the welds.
Then hit it with some 1200* high temp Ceramic spray from Kryllon I think..

e5.jpg

Here's the finished product- (besides the temp Pipe hanger bracket)
I have top weld up a Bracket for the Can next.

and the pic from the rear

Better pics when I get time- tired time for sleep..........

7-11 Project

7-11 Project

Like the new pipe & REALLY LIKED the road test video! :) You probably mentioned this somewhere but what did you use for the swing arm & wheels?

The swing arm is off a 1993 GSXR, the only one to have the "banana style"
I don't know if you have noticed, but I don't like to be "normal", and Normally everyone chooses the other styles or arms available.
The rear wheel is off a 95? GSXR1100-
In my Phtotobucket acct the notes explain alot more details of the arm.

I used my HF tire machine to mount the new rubber on the wheel.
It had a Dunlop 190/50-17, now rides on a Shinko 180/55-17 (thanks Leon!)

Took me about an honest 10 mins to get it mounted.

I still need to do some spacing adjustments to clear the chain a tad bit more.
Then finalize the Motor mounts in Aluminum Stock I have on the shelf this weekend.

My Unifilters will be here Tuesday or Wednesday, I ordered these filters.

part# UP4245AST they have a 15* cant to them to allow for frame clearance.

The nice thing about the banana swingarm is you don't need a brake torque arm. The swingarm is slotted and the caliper slides back and forth in the slot to allow chain adjustments. I have one in my garage I had planned on using on the 700 but I ended up with a Works shock so I blew the swingarm conversion off.

Billy, want to sell that arm? How much? I got first dibs so you other VULTURES can BACK OFF!!!!!! LOL!!! Ray.

This is an ambitious project. Having that big radiator up front looks like it just clears the front finder. Does the large radiator affect the looks? Is that motor oil cooled with an oil cooler as well?

Maybe you can graft another smaller water cooler from a donor to give the bike a more natural GS look.

Believe it - it does NOT make contact with the front fender, but is unsightly to my project, IMHO also.

Yes it is NOT the way I want it yet (rad looks).
I have one for a Hayabusa which is literally 1/3rd the size.
Been seriously debating swapping it out before the final end of the project.
I know with the larger rad it onyl gets a tick over warm so far for the short trips I have been on.
My experience on my Hayabusa, as with most, will run mid point to warm, hot in traffic for extended periods.

I just want this bike dependable and low maintenance (ya right).
Just a daily rider is all I want honestly, without the anemic feeling in traffic.

I also have been contemplating going the oil cooled route, from one of my other oil cooled 1100 powered bikes.
But it is so hard for me to part a running bike

The oil cooler is mounted down low and is not in the way thankfully.

some progress from last night-

I am dabbling with the electrolysis method right now.
I ran it for 4 hrs last night using the battery charger on 6amps.

I am thinking of getting serious and slapping the AC/DC welder on it like one guy did to get it working faster.
But faster is not always better of course...

the site I am following-
http://antique-engines.com/electrol.asp

Be careful ~!

It is electricity, and for your own safety use your head around it.
Being a Licensed Electrician doesn't make me any better then anyone else, just teaches how to do a little more then most.
one thing to note, is that your paint will bubble and peel if it has any rust under it such as nicks scratches etc.

4 hrs in (11pm cst) I turned off the setup and left the tank soaking due top the amount of steel/rust buildup on the rods (they need to be cleaned every now and then as per the website addresses in it's instructions.

Nice work! Looks like that GSXR motor has lots of torque with it lofting the front wheel off the throttle. :D

Are you planning on upgrading the front end as well to run a radial tire? Mixing bias and radial tires on the same bike can lead to some potentially dangerous handling in the corners, if for no other reason than that rear radial is much much stickier than your front bias tire.

Thanks!
Yes hoping to swap out the Front end soon have to rebuild the shocks first-
In t he mean time trying to acquire a 120/80-17 in radial for the coming trip friday.
My uni filter pods should be here tuesday or so.

Made some adjustments and repairs and corrections today -

test ride pics.

Alrighty then -

Pulled the GSXR1074 water pumper out this morning, cannot get the inverted front end on with the radiator in the way can I?

here's what we have now

1989 GSX1100F donor motor, all 1127cc of beauty.

I have to fab a tab to pull the oil cooler back some, but she's right on time-
Also the lower rear motor mounts worked out perfect no spacer on the left needed.
The front mounts, just needed the hole moved out 1/2", the upper rears will need 2 brackets modified easy thing I can do tomorrow.

I still need to fabricate an exhaust hanger, glad I did not do it yet, since I swapped out the motor-
* Notice the difference in length of 1.25" longer...

You either hav WAY too much time on your hands, are INSANE, or just a GLUTTON for punishment! I'm away from your bike for 4 days & next thing I see is the water cooler gone & replaced with an oil cooler! I really think the oil cooled motor suits that bike better as it was the next generation Suzuki motor anyway. Keep it up man! I should fly you out here & have you get on the stuff I don't have time for! LOL!! Ray.

Thanks Ray~

I believe a little bit of everything you mentioned is my problem or drive, however you wanna view it *thumbsup*

I still recall my Buddy telling me, " Oh man that Turbo isn't gonna fit on your Busa.. it's too big.."
You know that buddy believes me when I tell him anything now :p
The busa build:

If you got a dream/vision, I say make it reality by at least attempting and failing, rather then wondering if it could ever be.

LMK when you wanna send me the tickets so I can schedule that vacation time ;)

Peace-
Ron

- edit-

here's 1 & 1/2 hrs of progress this morning, took me longer to upload this short video

-edit- 4:10 pm cst

just got back from a 2 hour shake down ride on it-
I am utterly thrilled to say the least-
Incredible and fun with a flick of the wrist-
albeit the gearing is slightly tall, I am happy with the overall project.

Now for the final fitting and such-

Peace and thanks for the questions and responses-

Ron

-edit- Forgot to post this one last night before hitting the hay-

Is anyone else ready to get this one finished?
It's been a little over a year now, I have the itch again.
Time to finish this project. ;)

New replacement tank is on the way thanks to Oldbaldguy :twistedevil:
Stay Tuned for more
