1983 GS750T TSCC engine cam chain adjust

Capted

Forum Newbie
Bike seems noisy cold start when warmed up its quieter ,do I need to adjust the cam chain tensioner, loosen jam nut and turn screw out then tighten screw and nut ?

First post here? Welcome to the GSR forum.

Is the noise coming from the valve cover? Search for posts about"cam walk". Maybe that's what you're hearing.

Had the bike since new, never heard about Cam walk, it runs great and I like to rev it out ! Close to 90.000 km on it it's been bullet proof .

Welcome Capted, 43 yr. GS'r, gosh, you ain't no spring chicken are you? There are no adjustments on a GS tensioner, the spring is the only thing that tightens it. You can check the set screw, just to see it ain't against the pushrod, but if you didn't tighten it it sure didn't tighten itself. A thought, ride till it's warmed up and quieter, put on center stand, eng. running turn knurled knob, on the tensioner, counter clockwise gently till you hear cam chain noise, to try to determine if seems to be the same noise you're hearing when cold.

Just finished a ride down from Sault Ste. MARIE Ont. CANADA to Windsor Ont. on the I75 on my 83 GS750T ! I'm 72 been riding motorcycles at 12 years old , I also ride dirt DRZ400E ! Yes set screw is tightened it was first time I adjusted cam chain so I tightened it again

Your GS has an automatic cam chain tensioner. There is no adjustment possible.

The set screw is only used when first installing the tensioner; you manually wind up the knob by pushing in the plunger, then you tighten the set screw to hold it compressed while you install the tensioner. Once installed, you are to back off the set screw, and that will allow the automatic tensioner to function, and the pushrod will spring out to take up chain slack. With the set screw backed off from the tensioner rod, you then tighten the lock nut to hold it in place.

The problem with automatic cam chain tensioner is they are always applying spring pressure on cam chain premature stretching then you need to change the cam chain, had that happen on my DRZ400E so I installed a manual cam chain adjuster . So what I am doing is basically using the auto cam chain on the 750 as a manual adjuster by loosening set screw letting spring load push then locking set screw. Has worked for me all these years .

I don't know, May be right on a DRZ 400, but have seen a lot of high mileage GS's and not never heard if anything like that on a GS.

Did you turn the crankshaft slightly forward to be sure there was no slack between the cams or between crankshaft and ex. cam before tightening set screw down? Not sure if spring on tensioner is strong enough to turn crankshaft or cams to get slack out, if there was any, it normally just takes up the slack that is there as eng. turns.

Glad you found us after all these yrs. Hopefully you've found and corrected noise. .. Just wondering how often a manual tensioner should be adjusted, or how often have you been loosening the setscrew to let yours adjust itself?
