I'd check the sump to make sure that that the fuel hasn't dumped through to there. I had similar symptoms after not using it for a month and it turned out i had 2 litres of petrol in the sump!

Will drop the sump this afternoon, fired it up again this morning and it locked up again, starter motor wouldnt even budge, put the bike in gear and rocked it back and forth and it fired up... Something weird is going on...

Sounds like you petcock is fvcked?
Did you buy a new one after the last lot of problems you had with it?

I'll pull the petcock off tomorrow and check it out, i didnt buy a new one last time, just got one that still had a soft diaphram.

145 and 150 psi per cylinder & the petcock is stuffed, the plugs are wet and black.

That's a good start,145/150 is under 5% difference. Have the top end off and replace the gaskets and you are done. Something else to consider is maybe giving the carbs a once-over while you are at it. Something simple but important is checking the cv carb is sealing, i.e.you want this, you don't want this.

yeah i'll give them a clean out too, will check the diaphragms they are bloody expensive too! I've decided any parts i need i will get from the US or the UK.

It may be them being leaky or just a wonky install that can be fixed by dissasembly and a good old tidy up .

i know they dont leak air, as i sprayed them yesterday with some carb cleaner and the revs didnt change and they have new o rings on the carb to engine rubbers. Will price up my gaskets tomorrow.

Buy a genuine petcock, it will cost more, but will save you time and money in the long run.
I have done the rebuild, an aftermarket one, and now i have a genuine. I would only buy a genuine one from now on.

I've been away from the forums for afew weeks now, had some wisdom teeth out, 2 out 2 to go.

I have ordered the gaskets for my bike, $28 for a top end gasket set sent to my door from the UK.

Top end is all apart and clean waiting on the new gaskets to show. The cam chain tensioner runners have some slight grooves in them, nothing to bad though everything came apart really well, but the base gasket was a pain to get off, took afew hours of scraping.

The pistons are pretty sooty i was thinking of taking them off and cleaning them, also the exhaust valves on the rh cylinder are brown where as the others are black. So i thought i would pull them out and clean them up as well. I think i get valve stem oil seals with the top end kit.

Wondered where you'd been Josh! Good to see you back, those wisdom teeth can be a PITA for sure!

Good price on the gasket set there too, looking forward to seeing how it comes together :)

hey Pete yeah they were an experience thats for sure, no stitches in these 2 though, the other 2 will be a different story i am sure, i'm pushing to get them taken out asap, the dry socket wasnt fun.

The engine internals are really clean which is a good thing, the pistons look like they are only held on by 2 little spring clips? I dont really want to clean them while they are on the motor. The headgasket was absolutely blown and leaking everywhere. its all cleaned up now and waiting to go back together, the base gasket was rock hard and leaking nicely as well.

I've done it all in frame so far, cant afford to paint the engine so it will have to stay how it is on the outside unfortunately.

Bugger! I had mine out... would be 20 years ago now... wow I'm gettin' old! haha

They came out relatively smoothly, but still sore for a while. Best fun for me was the dentist gave me valium and didn't realise those sorts of drugs knock me out big time... he was worried quite a bit because an hour and a half later I finally started to wake up...

Engine sounds good if it's nice and clean in there, and glad you found the source of the leaks.

The pistons have a rod (can't remember the correct name) that goes through them and there's a wrist pin (I think that's right) on either side to stop the rod coming out and scoring the cylinder.

Your engine doesn't look too bad on the outside, so should be right for a while yet :)

Yep, gudgeon pin to you, me and Pete, or wrist pin, piston pin, depending what side of the Atlantic you are on.;)
Correct there is a small circlip on either side of the gudgeon pin that stops it from coming out and scoring the cylinder bore, some motors have little teflon buttons as opposed to the circlips.
Sounds like you making good head way there Woodsy, keep it up.

Cool, got it, knew what I meant but couldn't for the life of me think what they're called  And of course I called the circlip the wrist pin... sheeesh... at least I don't claim to be a mechanic! :o

Try www.allensperformance.co.uk from what I've heard they do exchange/new diaphragms at reasonable prices( around ?45-48 each), I've dealt with them buying main jets for my GSX11 engined GS1000.They were helpful and we set up a sale or exchange with no trouble-as long as the jets were returned in a "saleable condition" ie. not marked/scored. I did these sketches for another member when he wanted to know about damaged diaphragms and how to strip them, hope you find them of some use and that I'm not insulting your abilities.Johnny

Thanks for the Pics Johnny, My diaphragms are in good nick, i've given them a good once over and they both return to the bottom at the same rate.

Hoping my stuff shows up today.
