    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1984 GS 1150 engine into GS1000L frame

Hi

I wonder if a GS1150 engine made in 1984 will fit into a GS1000L (1981) frame without doing any major mods. The reason being is that my GS1000 engine gave up and it seems to be more cost effective to swap the whole engine instead on trying to rebuild the old one.
Did anybody attempt this in the past ? Can it be done ? [-o<
I looked through the messages and only found 750/1000 swaps ...

If it had been an '80 GS1100L frame it would be a bolt in...but in '81 they dropped the 16 valve 1100L model. It can definitely be done, but you may have to make some motor mounts which are not that hard to make.

Isn't the '81 1000L a "shaftie" ? ( I think '79 was the only chain drive 1000L ).

May be tough going with a 1150 chain drive engine.....

Oh no, you guys are absolutely right. I have not driven this bike for a while since I have a newer one as well, but you are correct it is shaft driven.
I guess now I'm toast - I've found a decent GS1150 engine, but it will do me no good. I think it might be possible to change the rear tire and such
and take out the shaft link all together.
This sounds like a lot of work and I need to buy many more parts to make it work - if the engine even fits in the frame with making new motor mounts as somebody mentioned.
Basically it is bad to have an older shaft driven vehicle in a sense that the parts supply is very limited ...

I might have to shoot the bike since I'm not able to spend a few thousend dollars to make it work again.
