A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey All, haven't posted in a long time, been working on my 78 gs 750. I will be posting a few pics. Its looking pretty good so far.

Question - doing the valve shims. Intake #2 currently has a reading of .089mm which is outside of the .03-.08mm spec. The shim that is currently in it is 2.75. I do have a 2.80 but I think this would close it up to much. It would put it at .039mm. What do think I should do. Leave it as is or place the 2.80 in it.

Thank you

In this particular case, tight is worse than loose ;)

I've seen people say they've run them up to 0.12mm with no ill effects...

well thanks to all. You have made my decision based on your vast knowledge. I think I owe you all at least a pic. Give me 30min or so and I'll post one. Still on dial up, believe it or not, so it will take a little while.

Here it is so far. Striped down to the frame. This is my first go round of restoring a bike and must say its pretty enjoyable to see the results of dedicated work. Enjoy the pic and thanks again guys. Appreciate your help.

Yet another confirmation to leave it as is.

Vety nice.

Tell us about the paint job, please.

Thanks to all for the compliments.
This is my first restore project and will not be my last. Bought the bike a year ago for $500. Was in pretty bad cosmetic condition and mechanically so so.

I totally stripped the bike to its frame. Frame was pretty rusty, so out came the drill, wire wheel and allot of time. Repainted all the black you see with Tremclad Gloss Black Professional rattle can paint. First used Tremclad rust inhibitor, then two coats of Tremclad Pro Primer then two coats of the paint. Turned out pretty good and smooth. While those parts were drying over the winter I painted the engine (after doing a little valve work and minor other work). Used VHT caliber paint. Went on very well. As far as the tank/side covers and tail piece, I had a local shop paint them. Turned out a little darker than the original but not bad at all. The did a very good job. Stripped it to metal, filled a few dents primed and paint. The inside of the tank was and is in very good condition. Don't know why but it is. So, long story short, I have done literally all the work myself with exception to painting the body pieces. I feel pretty good about my work as this is the first restore project I have taken on. Just working on the cabeling and brakes now. So far so good.

Thanks to all on this site, you have made this project allot easier.

Thanks

Show me a guy who completes his first rebuild with only 18 posts over one year and I'll show you a guy who knows how to use the search feature.
Bike looks outstanding, great job.

You have done very well indeed, don't see many old bikes these days in that condition.

Is the clutch cover just well-polished? Almost looks chromed.

thanks again for all the positive comments guys. All the chrome looking parts are simply polished aluminum. Most (well Ok all of them ) were pitted pretty bad, you know, you've all seen them. So I started with wet sanding (by hand) 600, 800, 1000 and 1200 grit then used auto solve and a polishing wheel on my hand drill and table top grinder. That auto solve works very well. I remember using it to take the bluing off the chrome pipes back in high school.
