I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

530 vs 630

I've been told that 630 chains are old technology. I thought 530 vs 630 denoted only a size difference.

Is the reason 630s are falling out of favor because the technology (strength) of the 530 has improved to the point that the extra size and weight of 630 is no longer necessary?

That's pretty much it. Strength, o rings or x rings, they are just made better now. Even the most powerful bikes now come with 530s, so the 630 stuff is getting harder to find.

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks for the info. Besides "O" and "X" rings, are there any other types?

Probably by now. O rings came first, huge improvement over open chains. X rings came later, they last longer, keep the grease in, water and dirt out better, I think they are easier to bend so less power is lost.

630

630

I like my 630. I didn't realize that buying replacement parts would be a problem. So now I'll have to do extra care to keep the old beast in good shape.

That killer super good price ALWAYS eludes me. I must live in a different world.

Why does anyone prefer a 630? Heavier, no stronger, more power loss, with no tangible benefit. I converted my 1150 to 530 and can't think of a reason to have stayed with the 630.

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It

^^^If a 630 works, why mess with it?

One thing I'm learning is...these bikes have Gremlins. Once you (in general terms) fix one thing, something else comes along and needs attention.

It's a nice upgrade but with the expenses that come along with repairing those Gremlins, I'd rather spend the money on those unique instances.

I agree, converted my 78 1000 to 530. Think my 82 GPz750 might have a new 630 under the grunge,it's either that or it needs a new chain as all the chain related stuff was flagged with post it paper. If the former I'll run it till it wears out, turns out to be the later it's going 530.

Just A Term I Use...

Just A Term I Use...

Gremlins, that's new. All I've ever seen is neglect.

It was early this morning and that's what came to mind.

Another term that comes to mind is, "fair, wear, and tear" and "scheduled maintenance".

Not knocking the 630/530 conversion...I will eventually do it. MrBill had suggested it to me the first time we met up last year. He said it was the best decision he made.

Thank You!

Thank You!

Ha, that's a good one:) I think what Ed means is, he'll hold off on the 530 up grade till his 630 wears out... I think??

Yes, that is correct Storm. And I also thought about a movie called "Gremlins" with Phoebe Cates.

Yup, when I compared my old 630 to the new 530 set up, the weight difference was huge. Being that a new 630 chain just by itself was going to cost more then the complete 530 setup. Once I had installed the 530 set up the alignment was spot on and could feel the difference in throttle response as well. If your current 630 set up is fairly new yet, it would be silly to do the conversion right now. Though once you are ready for a new chain and sprockets, that is the time to do it. And as far as the master link is concerned, I've have always used the clip links, never have I had a problem with one. Once I get the clip seated, I dab a little bit of silicone over the clip for a little added measure of securing it.

Did the conversion on my '78 750 last season and could not be happier. There are 520 conversions for todays liter bikes so I think the 530 is strong enough. :)
