A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Could you post a picture of your LH switch. Not important, but would be interesting to see if it looks like the earlier GS switch. The 550T may have been using up some earlier left-over GS parts. Have I forgot or am I correct in remembering the "T" models were the most economical model of the GS's? I see now I've forgot some stuff, I's thinking the "T"'s had spoke wheels & rear drum brake, now not sure what is was, but I think the "T"'s were the cheaper model of the GS's.

T is touring model, no kick start upgraded generator. Spoke wheels and disc brakes front and rear

Almost sure, that on/off knob should have a small piece of plastic, that goes down in the slot, that keeps it from being slid to the off pos., maybe the same switch used in other countries, but they had a knob without the plastic stop, so it could be slid to the off pos. Newer style had just one button, slide button up/down for hi/lo beam, & slide same button R/L for R turn & L turn. Thanks for the pic. Glad you found what was wrong.

Huh interesting. So I got the new battery in and all connections checked and cleaned. new values for voltage test below

Key off engine off 12.3
Key on engine off. 12.1
Key on cranking. 11.6
Key on cranking with headlights. 11.4
Key on engine on. 12.2 to 12.8

Started everytime after new battery install. Think I got it squared away for now!

You didn’t post all the quick test numbers. No telling fs battery is being charged or how well. Post all the numbers.

2500 rpm is 13.3 to 13.8
5000 rpm is 14.2 to 14.6
Battery is staying at 12.6 after running, engine off

I’m no expert but those numbers look good for the state of our charging system. If you’re no longer experience the occasional no-start issue, maybe you cleaned the right connector. Who knows.

Yea the old battery had no date. When I put it on the bench tester it failed immediately. All connections looked okay and were tight. Seems to be charging well now and holding a charge after a long ride.

I can turn my headlight off/on on my 81 550t as well - they made two different kinds of mechanisms for that year.

Yours are very easy to modify, most everyone around our local bike shop trimmed the little plastic piece off to make them operate like the pre "78" models did. Someone knows for sure, but I'm reasonably sure the law that went in, in "78" made it where no street bikes were allowed to have OEM operating headlight switches. Not many "T"'s were sold in my area, Personally I liked the "T" quite a bit better than the "L".

Yea I actually love the fact that I can turn the headlight off. Not that i will when riding of course. Specifically for the symptoms i was just experiencing. Starter getting a rattling from my right muffler this morning on a hard ride. I needed an excuse to replace them anyway. Went to go look at this beauty triumph down the road
