    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I will soon be working on the '82 650GL that is on the back porch. :eek:

Part of the work will be re-assembling a 'new' engine to put in, but I am having trouble locating a complete gasket set.
I know they should be available, but I am having difficulty even locating the fiche where they are listed. Any clues?

The only place I have actually seen them listed is at Parts-N-More. Not sure which brand, but the set is $95, which probably isn't too bad.

Steve, I recently checked this out for someone on another thread. Apparently the 650G gasket sets are no longer available. They're referenced on the optional fiche (at least for the model I looked at), but no longer available for purchase.

Partsnmore sells Athena gasket sets IIRC (edit - sorry Steve, that's If I Recall Correctly). Their cover gaskets seemed just fine to me, but apparently the base gasket is too soft. My 550's head started weeping oil after using the Athenas. Ed seems to think that's actually the base gasket's fault for extruding too much and releasing too much pressure on the head. I'd replace that with an OEM gasket. Up to you whether or not you wish to gamble on the head gasket or not. Oh, and I've heard their valve stem seals are no good.

Athena base gaskets suck. Period. Their other gaskets are pretty crappy too, particularly the paper ones - the gasket paper is low density and oil can seep through. The MLS head gaskets actually seem decent though. Use at your own risk.

Look in the "Optional" section of the fiche for the gasket set, #8, part# 11400-3482. Unfortunately it is NLA. :(

You'll probably want to use OEM for the critical gaskets and O-rings on the base and head. That's my plan when I freshen up the top end on Jessie, probably later this year.

I think the whole gasket war is kind of silly.

These bikes tend to leak anyways!

If you have tons of money laying around, and are putting your bike up for a beauty pageant or something....go with OEM.

But for a regular daily rider or weekend cruiser.........who cares?

I've used plenty of these aftermarkets with no leaking.
I've also had OEM's leak....with proper torque specs.

I've made 'em out of gasket paper and RTV, and never had leaks......whatever gets the job done.

I did look on the "Optional" fiche, but the couple sources I checked evidently don't show the "NLA" stuff at all, so there was NO mention of gasket sets at all.

When the leak is bad enough to put oil on your boots or pant legs on every ride, I care.

I am not one of the tree-hugger types, but if you can keep potentially harmful liquids contained until the proper time to drain and replenish them, why not?

Yeah, there are the classic jokes that apply to more than one marque:
"Your bike is leaking"
"Good, that means I still have oil."
 
ok.......well, the athena a set is pretty complete. Not bad. it'll get you through for a bit. My base gasket ran out of squish after i re-torqued the head nuts a 4th time because of a base gasket leak around the cam chain tunnel. I got the OEM and no leaks there. You can get the OEM base gaskets individually. Just have to look around. They are of superior quality to the Athena stuff. A side by side will prove it. Unfortunately I never took pictures. The OEM had a little bit of extra thoughtful things added to possible problem areas, such as a little of what looked like a thin rubber? strip added to the cam chain tunnel areas. hard to describe. but Its obvious. I got my base gasket from http://www.willyworldcycles.com I called them to verify they had the part in stock and would sell it seperatly since most places only sell a cylinder gasket set. I assume that the set includes the head and base gaskets and cylinder orings. Im not sure what is included in there though. Ill call my suzuki parts guy at the local dealer tomorrow to find out just for my own info because i need to know as well. Im going to do another tear down this winter to verify everything is still ok after this riding season on my first rebuild. And i gotta replace some small seals and stuff. (bike doesnt mark its territory on the pavement, but it like to drip a little on my left toes while riding....i know the culprit...but i dont get it.) Any ways, Partshark has the cylinder gasket set for 100ish bucks.
