    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

77 750 wiring question

Gents,

I'm close to putting a battery in, and the wire in the picture below was hanging out near the battery compartment, looking like it wants to be attached to the negative terminal. Can that be right? What is this wire for? I thought the negative terminal was only to be grounded...any help would be appreciated!

I'm working on a 77 GS750 that I picked up for a song last summer. Finally found some time to work on her, and she's been dubbed Misty. Ya, she's a real treat on the eyes.

Basscliff, no need for the mega-welcome - I've seen it, and both that and your website are amazing. They've been my guide thus far. Many thanks.

Well, where/what does that wire connect to? Might be an additional ground to battery negative added to improve charging, but could also be for some accessory plug the PO thoughtfully left you.

PS; "Misty" ? there was a Clint Eastwood movie "play misty for me" so beware!

Sorry, I meant to mention that. It's going down into the engine, near the back, at the same spot some other wiring goes in. Not sure where from there...
 
Into the back of engine?? same place where starter motor positive cable goes? usually the wires from stator are in same place, so you have to keep digging - i.e. remove starter motor cover

Kind of hard to see, due to the very small picture size, but it does appear to be a rather large gauge wire. If it is a large wire, that IS your ground wire. :eek:

If that's the wire I think it is, follow it down, you may find that it is bolted to the back of the engine cases. That is the large wire that provides the return path for the starter.

You may also find another wire or two that will connect to the negative terminal of the battery. ANY wire on the bike that is black with a white stripe is a ground wire. Be sure to look for the white stripe, because the power wire for the left turn signal is solid black.

Excellent, thanks for the help gents! It was indeed the ground wire, and there are a couple of others as well, and they're grounded to the frame bolt under the front of the seat.

And I'm not sure why I dubbed her Misty...wanted a somewhat stripper sounding name (apologies to anyone with mothers/sisters/wives named Misty) because she's a bit on the rough side.
