    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

77 GS550 front caliper wobble

Hey there, I just recently picked up an old 77 GS 550 and noticed off the bat that the front caliper kinda has some wiggle to it unless you apply the brake really firmly. The bolts are tight but I'm wondering if they had copper washers or o-rings as a bushing. Anybody familiar with this issue I would appreciate and info you could pass along as to what I need to do to rectify this. Thanks in advance!
 
The ncaliper body should miove just a tad. The pad carrier cradle is whats bolted to the forks. In other words, as the brakes are relaxed it has to float a bit to allow the pads to release off the rotor. When the brakes are applied, then it all stiffens up as the pads grip the rotor. Does this help with the explanation? Yes there are orings on the carrier rods..which youll see in a parts fiche of the calipers.
 
Had the same problem with my 1150. In my case the bike was towed ( stator and r/r cooked 200 miles from home) and the tow truck operator hooked a strap onto the rotors (my bad for allowing it). After it was back on the road, i noticed pulsing at the lever under light braking. I had to replace the rotors.
 
Bent rotors suck!
Whenever you see New Tires on a bike....LOOK for bent rotors!

You wouldn't believe how many idiots manage to bend them, while installing tires.
(more common on the Newer bikes, because the rotors are paper thin)
 
Thanks everybody. I'm going to keep looking around as I clean up everything and see if I can figure it out more. The pad cradle/floating caliper makes sense when it comes to the movement I have in the part. I've ridden it just over 100 miles now and I'm wondering if what I'm feeling in the front end is just a bike that is 35+ years old....The headstock bearing feels fine and the wheel bearing does too.
