77 GS750 gauges stuck and both cables broken

I don't think I've ever seen this one before. Both tach and speedo cables are broken, twisted to break. So I checked the tach and speedo and neither of them will budge. I'm talking about the part, of the gauge, that engages the inner cable. I took the gauges off and inverted them and squirted some PB Blaster on the exposed surfaces. After about 10 min still neither will budge. I'm using one of the broken inner cables "Square" end and a pair of pliers to gently apply twisting pressure. I'll let them soak overnight and see what I have tomorrow. Probably should apply heat but I don't have anything like a small torch so I tried my soldering gun and that just can't heat up that much mass.

I'm open to suggestions...

Don't leave them inverted overnight if the PB makes it to the inside of the lens you get to look at the smudge the rest of your life. They may loosen up if they are seized at the cable connector.

Open the housings with a small screwdriver uncrimping the bezel. Once you get them open figure out what's going on. Or, throw them in the trash and get something better. Shouldn't be too hard based on what you say.

I have a magnetic induction heater I used to get the parts hot. They freed up pretty good and I was able to spin them with a cordless drill. I saw both gauges register. But as soon as it cooled down they were stuck again. I'll take them apart and see whats still frozen and maybe be able to take it apart enough to actually clean the moving parts. I haven't given up yet. But I'm also searching eBay for replacement gauges...

If it spins when warm, I'd recommend lubricating the cables.

I have a good set of either 77 or 78 setting on the shelf. Either year you can transplant the speedo and into another housing and be good to go. I will snap a pic when I get home from work and post them. If your interested we can talk money then.

No cables attached. They both twisted off and broke that's when I tried to manually spin the connector on the gauge itself and found them both stuck.

Thank you Chuck. Yes since I ruined the tach face I will need both tach and speedometer. The 77 has the igntion switch as part of the plastic bezel so yes I will have to transplant the new gauges. I would be very interested in seeing the gauges you have. Please post pics.

they are 77 gauges but I dont have a key for the ignition.

That looks just perfect. We need to agree on a price + shipping. As for the key, I will swap my ignition switch into that bezel so that will work perfect.

Yeah...just use the best wiring and whatever from both rigs and build a nice set for the bike is what I am thinking. I will Pm you my email so we can cut a deal.

Update. The new gauges work fine and look great. Thank you. They are both just a little lazy. I'm sure they will respond more quickly once it gets warmer here and I ride it some.

John. You can drill a 1/4 hole in the plastic cases just on top of the fitting the cable screws to. Be easy and once its trough you can peek in and see the armatures. Put a straw like what comes with a can of carb spray onto a can of PB Blaster and give a quick shot of lube onto the armatures. The dry off the housing and use a spot of RTV to seal the hole. Note that too much lube and youll see it puddle at the bottom of the faces and the glass, so just a quick little shot of lube is all you do.

Don't bother with WD40.

EDIT...guess you can also cover the hole with some Gorilla tape so if you want to relube again its just a peel the tape deal.
