A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

hi everyone I'm new to this site and I'm new to the gs1000, I purchased one in September after looking for a bike I want to restore its in pretty good condition and starts fine but after its running for 5 to 10 minutes to dies and then when I start it again it starts but dies nearly straight away could it be its not holding charge I have clean and check connectors to regulator/rectifier and the earths and it go a new battery fully charged, would it be worth testing them with a multimeter or am'i on the wrong path, thanks any help would be great.

Welcome to the site.:)

Someone should be along soon to provide you with your "Mega Welcome" chocked full of great links to help you sort out your bike. In the mean time, please check my signature for a link to the Newbie Mistakes thread. It will help guide you by highlighting a few things to look for and avoid.

Good luck and enjoy your new toy.:D

sounds like fuel starvation, have you tried running it with the petcock on prime?
check the fuel line and vacuum line from tank to carbs also the vent in the filler cap to see if that is blocked.
if all ok so far it sounds like you need to strip and clean your carbs thoroughly and check all settings, especially float heights.

Welcome to the site. Everybody else above has put you on the right track and so I will only address this one part - it's always a good idea to use the multimeter to ensure your electrical system is working properly. Using the top ten newbie thread that Nessism pointed out, go through and check everything.

thanks for the replies guys yes the bike has a good spark, I will check the fuel line and vacuum line and also the filler cap breather also, do you boys think I should start from here and see how I get on, I will also check the links you have posted me can't wait to get stuck into this bike

just went out to bike put tap on prime and away she goes she ticking over lovely now for 10 minutes not a problem, so people what's the problem here is it the petcock?

Maybe you are low on gas? On only goes to about two ir three inches left in the tank, PRI and RES go to the bottom.
Maybe the normal petcock screen is clogged, PRI or RES uses a different screen.
Maybe the vacuum operated petcock isn't getting enough vacuum to turn it on completely?
Could be a few other things. At least you have it narrowed down now.

Start by filling the tank, and then testing the petcock.

Don't let it idle too long, parts of the engine will get very hot without airflow.

I will try what you said first, fill tank and try petcock turned to on, if still having problems maybe screens blocked restricting flow is this what you mean? I'm made up I've progressed already and I've only started on site today!

Don't fill it too full, if you do need to remove the petcock you will need to put all that fuel someplace.

yeh true didn't think of that haha, since I'm new to the gs1000 is there anything you recommend to me to do to bike to keep it in good working order, I love working on bikes and eager to learn as much as I can.

Dont worry about filling it up. All you need is an empty 5 gallon can and a good length of hose. Run it from the big nipple on the petcock to the can and set it to PRIme..let the tank empty.

I also advise you rinse the tank with some gas and drain it off thru an old sock or something that will catch the sediment that comes out..this will give you an indication of what is laying in there.

To rinse the crud out of the tank youll want to flush it several times and drain it till you no longer are getting crud in the stariner material.

if your just running it sitting still...PUT A FAN on the engine..or one on each side.

Once youve sorted the petcock, then youll need to do the valves, rebuild the carbs, and sync the carbs with the proper guages.

If a lot of rust comes out when you filter the gas to see whats in it, youll also want to derust and line the tank.

thanks for the info guys, I will do as you say about the tank I give it a good clean out and check for any rust. after this is sorted, how hard is it to do valves and rebuild carbs like you mentioned, as I am a novice do you think I could do this myself? I've tackled a lot of other work on bikes but never much on engines or carbs.

Greetings and Salutations!!

Hi Mr. dartfuldogers,

Sorry I'm late with this. It's your S.W.A.G. :) Also known as the "mega-welcome". Follow the links below and you will find maintenance lists and a lot of "how-to" guides to performing that maintenance. Most of the regular maintenance tasks are pretty well documented on my little website. As has been suggested, you should spend about a week there reading all about the care and feeding of a 30 year old GS motorcycle. Please be warned that any shortcuts in the proper maintenance of a 30 year old motorcycle can leave you severely dead or injured. Now, off you go. ;)

If you are here you probably have a 30 year old motorcycle that needs about 20 years worth of maintenance. You'll find all kinds of helpful tips, procedures, manuals, diagrams, "how-to" guides, etc, in the links below. Let's get started.

Let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS lovin'. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.
