79 GS1000 carb options

I have a 79 GS1000 that Im thinking about doing a carb swap over the winter to gain some performance. I currently have the stock VM26's with a stage 3 dynojet kit, UNI pods and stock exhaust with aftermarket mufflers welded on. Ive read about guys putting RS34's on the 1000, but also read that it only works on 1980 and newer cylinder heads. Would Vm28 pumper carbs be a worth while upgrade, and would the needles from my dynojet kit swap over? Just looking for some input on what I should be shopping for.

When you get your carbs off pull one of your rubber intake manifolds off and measure your intake port from side to side. And pick a carb size that is no more than 3mm larger or no less than 1mm larger than the intake port. And never put carbs on that are smaller than the intake port. 1 mm larger is better for road racing and more bottom end and 3mm larger for drag racing and wide open. But I always try for 2mm larger because it is the best for all around street riding.

You need to install KZ1000 "J" "P" model head - to - carb insulators (after '82~'00) onto your GS head and then you may run the 32/34/36 BS constant velocity carbs or go with RS racing carbs.

slight roto / dremel clearancing necessary to the insulators because the GS bolt spacing are a little narrower. it is really simple

The BS CV carbs are so nice for excellent fuel economy and smooth power delivery- no the needles do not interchange - but do get a stg 3 jet kit for the CV's and you'll love your new bike.
it will feel like a new bike. it is simple and I promise you'll be impressed.

VM28's will make a big difference, and the DJ needles will swap straight over.

With the slide carb head with the standard carb rubbers (carb to head) fitted the VM28 are the best you will get, but if you get ever the over sized rubbers off e*ay or a set of Z1000j rubbers you have a lot more options, you can go for GSXR1100g/h/j 34mm CV carbs or the GSXR1100 36mm CV will if but are very tight or spend a lot cash and put some 35mm CR race carbs on it as they will make a huge difference, but will only get about 15 mpg out of them.

what about 29mm smoothbores? they bolt right on to the stock carb rubbers!
The DJ needles WILL swap from the 26 to the 28's,they are exactly the same carbs, just bored out a bit. I used them in mine and they work just fine.
