DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I posted what I thought was a very detailed post yesterday and got 0 responses. Did I not give enough info? Surely I didn't stump everybody! Come on guys someone take a stab at it. I know somebody out there has some suggestions. Please help!

To save some time...can you post a link to yesterdays post? ;)

I'll start digging and before long...you'll have plenty of shovels on the job... :p

Never mind, I've got it.

Is the air filter in the airbox, lightly oiled and everything sealed up tightly?
Anybody drill extra holes in the air box while they had the bit on the exhaust?
Your thought of lean is correct, I believe. As you mentioned that all the carbs are CLEAN and have new o-rings, I won't go there. How have you verified that the jets are stock? Can you get the bike to rev while on choke? Is your timing on? I'll let you start with those questions...

No need for a new thread, just respond to your old thread and it will bump to the top.

I'd start by checking the points, I don't think that's the problem but it never hurts to check the basics.

Sounds like you have done your homework on the bike with the carb rebuild and so forth. When rebuilding the carbs did you verify the pilot jets were open by sticking a wire though them or holding them up to a light to verify the orifice is open?

Understand that the bike will typically require choke to get started down the road. On my old VM 550 it took choke for a few min's before the choke could be turned off. Don't expect it to run until it's warmed up some.

Hey, thanks a lot for responding. I had a bear of a time getting the boots back on the carbs. The center of it was so sunk in the outer 2 would go on but the center 2 were not even close. I had to remove the metal part of the box and have my wife get her little hands in there and finally after scarring up hands etc we finally got them on and all 4 clamps tight. I guess I don't know for sure if the jets are stock but the previous owner said they were never apart. I am going to check the points and the timing first even though it started right up.

This is a response to Nessism. The pilot jets are definitely clear and so are the bypass ports in the bottom of the carb throat. I will check the points as well. I did run the bike for about 10 minutes and figured it should respond to the throttle by then. Thanks

When you cleaned the carbs did you pull the emulsion tubes out and thoroughly clean them? May want to verify the fuel levels are right in the float bowls. That's a process that measures the amount of fuel in your bowls. If it's too low it will run lean on the botom end and will not repspond well to increased throttle.

VM carbs don't have emulsion tubes. Here is the carb rebuild tutorial for reference... http://www.thegsresources.com/files/vm_carb_rebuild.pdf

Hey, sorry I haven't replied back I was in pittsburgh today picking up an engine for a Kawasaki ZL900 that's blown up. Yes I made absolutely sure everything in them carbs is clear. I probably go overboard on carbs. I soak each body two or three times and use a can of carb cleaner for each carb and then use a water pic as a final check. That's why this is so frustrating! The exhaust mufflers have some sizeable holes in each one so I know this needs to be addressed. I also noticed that someone has put a cheap set of chinese points on this bike and they don't even come close to closing flush. I had to tweak them a little to get them right. The metal lid on the filter box is missing the gasket. Could this actually have an effect? Also the drain in the plastic air box is wide open but aren't they usually? I will address these issues and see what happens. Thanks
