A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Sure would save the time if someone could explain how to remove the tail cover on an 80 GS1000G.
The piece I refer to is the thing over the tail light and behind the seat (plastic painted).
TIA

look up under the fender for the nuts that attach it.

think there should be 3 10MM nuts and spacers.

I would follow chucks advice.
I don't own the 1k, but my 1100 had 3 bolts that held the mounting bracket, lock and tail piece together. Be careful when you pull it apart, my tail light took a swan dive when i lifted the tail piece(the previous owner didn't bolt it in).

Got if off and removed the hideous luggage rack; I couldn't get to the the nuts that retained with the tail piece in place (luggage rack bracket in the way). Will be taking off the tail piece again soon... repaint on the way. To follow up, when I paint, the molding on the back of the tail piece, the molding will have to come off. It is already slightly cracked in the corners and I suspect it will die when it is removed. It is either taped or glued I am guessing. This molding is called "Molding, seat tail cover" p/n 45522-45100 and is no longer available. Probably wouldn't buy this bit of trim as the listed price is $571.89.

Has anyone used chrome door edge guard to take the place of this obsolete trim part? $571.89? geesh

Do whatever you can to preserve the original moulding. Once it's broken, it's broken forever.

However if you go down the chrome door trim path, eBay is your friend. It comes in different sizes. Just make sure you get some that has adhesive on the inside. Without adhesive, it will pull away at the corners.

If you need to repair it: LockTite makes an 'epoxy' specifically for plastic. I just used some to repair my 'chrome' plastic turn signal housing and it worked well. It's actually (an extremely smelly) solvent that eats into the plastic and bonds with it. You can then sand and hit it with some filler, and paint it.

The piece is a plasti-chrome edge much like the door edge guards sold in an auto parts store. I know they sell chrome paint but I doubt it would enhance the appearance of a piece like this as the chrome paint tends to just be a mess.
