I decided to paint it. I taped off the ears to both give it a cool effect and, the ears take a "beating" so to speak with wheel adjustment and what not. Just a little blue tape. I like it. And yes, I know my frame is brown(bronze metallic) and my swingarm is gray/silver. I have a vision in my head for this custom , it will not be a stock looking GS.

Man I was hoping you'd discover an easy way of removing the anodizing from the swing arm - I have the same problem.

I've used crushed walnut shell media in a blast cabinet to remove the factory clear coating. It really is tough stuff.

yeah, i had the issue of the swingarm bein too shiny where I had polished it, (IN THE AREAS WHERE THE BATTERY ACID ATE THE COATING OFF) did not want that look. Primer and paint was my solution.
This product shown below is some nasty nasty stuff. I dont know if it will do anything on that coating, but it absolutely melts any other paint/clear I have come across.
BE CAREFUL, THIS STUFF BURNS BAD. ONE LITTLE DROP ON YOUR SKIN AND YOU ARE ON FIRE. rUBBER GLOVES AND GLASSES ARE A MUST. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HOSE IT OFF.

I think these are stock. I used that Luster Lace to weave between the coils and down around the piston and cylinder inside. They had mild surface rust on them and they come out nice. I used stripper to get the peeling clear off em first. Thats nice chrome they put on there.

Got the front wheel/axle/speedo box all lubed up and put on . Need to paint the rear rotor, but need to get it turned first, then I can reassemble the rear wheel suff and have a rollin chassis.

I got this bike two months ago. It only came with one side cover. I will not be using it. make me a fair offer. would buff up nice. tabs intact, emblem not bad..can send better pics if interested

Little update, almost ready to paint engine as it is mostly apart on the bench. Need to scrub and clean it all one more time. I am dying to get it done to re install, but I feel myself rushing and need to chill. Almost painted tonight, but the humidity is too high. I wish my GS was on the road, I always seem to know a great spot for the riding game pic and I just realized the New River Gorge ride is very soon and I will definately not make that. paint/reassemble engine, timing, valve adjustment, carbs are clean but need o rings to re assemble, break in the engine a little, front tire, stator, r/r, fix the po's electric spaghetti.
Oh yeah all as $$$ allows. Lovin the GSR site, thanks to all for past help and suggestions. Trust me, I will need more as it comes time to get my 1100 running right. Will post pics soon.

got oil pan and valve cover painted. I used Rustoleum engine paint. I see everyone using the VHT , both brands have one called Aluminun, and one called New Cast Aluminum...This paint looks ok so far, the parts I did were just dry a few hours, but came out smooth . I think a bit dull though.I used the Aluminum color. Might switch mid-stride and switch to the VHT new cast color.
Bottom end is ready for one more acetone wipe and a little more masking, before I spray. Cannot wait to see the clean engine in the fresh chassis.

Did you bake it to cure the paint some? I see a lot of people do it. I think it makes the paint a little more durable for assembly.

Yeah, I actually did. I was just reading a thread a few days prior about preheating the parts a bit and then baking after. I will do the same for the cylinders and head... I painted the bottom end after work today, I tried to put twin halogen work lights on it for an hour to warm it up, but I doubt it helped much. I also painted and clearcoated the six mounting "ears" that bolt to the frame and engine. Same color as frame. Need to get busy and get a engine gasket kit. Wanna get that thing back in.

Yeah, here is a good example of severe PO neglect. The front master cylinder piston was leaking, ruining the paint on the whole mc assembly, running down the wires/hoses to the front splitter stripping paint off the lower triple tree and anything else it dribbled across. Rebuild kit to be orderd, whole master cylinder disassembled and cleaned. gobs of brown/orange fluid plugging everything from the resevoir down to the caliper bleeders. not cool man.

Bottom end painted and installed. Jugs are bakin in the oven at this very moment, along with a few other parts. Have brake calipers painted and installed, whole brake system installed except front mastercylinder. Painting the lever housing and waiting for rebuild kit.

have not worked on this bike in a month or more, lost steam and money.
Gathering some funds to get carb o rings and engine gaskets.....I will ride this bastage some day. I also figured I better comment on my thread so it does not get deleted.....
