A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey guys I have a 1980 gs550 that I have been working on bobbering. Anyways I bought an aftermarket tail/brake light and for some reason I keep blowing the "signal" fuse. I can wire it to always have a running light but the second I wire it for the brake light and grab the brake the signal fuse will blow. I cut all the blinkers off and taped all the wires front and rear,
Could that have anything to do with no brake light and the blowing of the fuse?I'm pretty stumped here haha.

You must have a dead short some where in your brake light circuit.

You say that the tail light is OK, but it blows when you apply the brake. Since it does not blow before you apply the brake, there is no reason so suspect your cut and taped signal wires. Apparently there is a direct short in the tail/brake light.

Are you sure you have the wires connected correctly? Have you verified off the bike that the tail/brake light is working correctly? Not all aftermarket companies are kind enough to actually provide accurate documentation for their product, so please verify that it actually works, then install it on the bike. If it still blows a fuse, the problem is in the bike, not the light.

.

Thanks guys if I find time today after work I'm going to go through the whole thing again. And Im sure that it's wired correctly. But I will test the light I didn't think that could be an issue at all until u mentioned that steve... I'll let u know how it goes.

... I didn't think ...
Sadly, that's the reason there are so many posts in the tech help section.

You can't always trust the colors or the descriptions, especially if the product was produced "somewhat (significantly?) west of San Francisco".

Connect a jumper wire from a battery to what you believe is a ground, then connect another jumper from the positive wire of the battery to each of the two wires to see what it does. When you have verified what wire does what, then you can connect it to the bike.

Please let us know what you find.

take the bulb out of the light and try it. I've actually seen bad bulbs and/or sockets that had a short , which blew fuses!

That would also show itself in the independant test that I suggested.

With the light removed from the bike (at least electrically), you can do a whole BUNCH of testing without blowing any of the bike's fuses. Once you KNOW that the bike is working, connect the wires and try again. If you blow fuses now, you know it's not the light.

Ok so I figured it out.... Steve u were right it was the light itself the whole time! The ground was broken off completely! So I re wired the whole thing and it works like a champ haha thanks for the help guys maybe next time I won't overlook the obvious and trust what comes through the mail.
