well i had a post on my charging system. well i thought it was good i checked my battery and at idle it put out 13v when i rev it up it would drop to 12.8 well went for a ride and no starting after that couple slow cranks. i dont know how to test the R/R or nothing. what would be your best guesses and what should i do? sorry for asking the same questions again. And it just puzzles me why 13 v wouldnt keep it going when a max charge is that. help im getting my tabs toomorow i need to ride.

Being that youre from MN and Im older than you that qualify s me to yell at you.......READ THE STATOR PAPERS !!! AGAIN !!

12.9 OR 13 vdc is not charging. Ya gotta have over 14vdc. Have you cleaned any connectors ? Jumpered the RR ground to the - batt post ? Checked the stator ACV output ? If you get down to Leos or Moto Primo let me know and Ill give it a once over.

Dont spend that $40 at Red Lobster this weekend. Mac and Cheese for you buddy. Chances are youre gonna need a new RR from Duanage. $40.

i figured i would get a response like this but thank you for helping. i lost my page so i dont know how you said to check the stator papers i dont know how to test really anything i would need a good discription. again i did clean the conectors but that was it. i dont even know were those parts are all located so pictures would be real nice. im new to working on bikes i would say i specailize in old chevys. i can do anything thing any one would want to one of them.

All excellent suggestions. Get some contact cleaner and dielectric grease and go though ALL harness connections and grounds completely to eliminate them as a source for your problems. Is your battery good? Without the first two items being right you will never get good results from the stator papers which should be step 3. Go one step at a time and you will find the problem.

well see my battery is got my wondering too it was brand new i filled it and charged it for a half hour through it in the bike and rode it then it was dead i took it out and charged it at 2 amps all night rode it a couple times and then dead again like i said if you could give me details on how to check everything it would be nice. like i stated i dont even know were the stator is im guessing its the brass coils in the starter clutch housing. i am learning though i can take a starter clutch on and off and rebuild and put it on in about a half hour.

Do you have a service manual? Check Basscliffs site and there should be one there. Have you taken the main battery ground wire to the motor connection and cleaned it? The stator wires come out of the end of the starter motor cover in the center of the motor. Should be three yellow wires.

Did you extend the R/R ground wire and run it directly to the neg terminal on the battery? If this doesn't work, you need to check the voltage across the different legs of the stator. Do a search on "stator papers" and do the checks.

yah i think bass cliff is the guy that did send me the big page on how to check it ill have to talk to him once. this whole thing ****ed me off my bike worked great for a year i bought it for 500 bucks and it was a steal. my starter clutch broke and i brought it to a guy and he says he told me my charging sytem was bad i left his shop with a 600 dollar bill and now my system dont work and it always worked good. im just getting real fustrated with the whole thing i almost sold it but i just cant cause it runs so nice. its been this little stuff but yah i guess ill be working on it again. who hoo.

At what rpm should i get over 14 volts at the battery? Cause I only saw maybe 13.8 with the revs up a bit on my bike. My bikes po put a honda? regulator on mine.

what do you guys recomend if i need a new regulator bike bandit wants 187 for my part if i need it. should i go for a newer honda one or somthing?

Go to the Tips forum and read the R/R thread. You can get a R/R for $40 or less.

alright do you know were i can get them that cheap. is bike bandit a bad place for parts im always looking there cause its nice with diagrams and some times i look into the old bike barn.com

If you would just go to that thread like I suggested and do some research, you would see that people are buying R/R's off ebay or a member here for cheap.

are you a minnesotan too? well i was just out side looking at it and i found the R/R and it is under my left side cover bolted to a real thin peice of steal and if the white and black wire is suppose to be the ground i dont get how that works to me it looks like it runs out of the R/R does a loop and goes right behind it. i dont see how it would get a good ground on that thin peice of steal so i will ground it toomorow and test it. dave i was asking you if you were the minnesotan. if you are were are you located at?

ok guys well i just found bass cliffs sight and that is great i should be able to get my system checked out with no problem thanks for all the work bass cliff. i dont konw if it is stock or some one else did it but all my electirc parts are mounted to thin steel witch looks stock right under my left side cover.

My $0.02

My $0.02

While having "all" of your connectors in tip top shape is important, there are really only 5 paths that HAVE to be rock solid to get proper charging.

First the three stator legs should go direct to the R/R. Soldering the connections will minimize any losses and fight corrosion. At least replace the bullets with spades and make sure they dont get hot.

Second as describe the rubber mounted side plate doesn't provide a very good ground so make sure that there is a direct connection by daisy chaining the negative ring lug to the case of the R/R and then to the neg side of the battery (about 12" of wire).

Finally and this is often overlooked, the positive output needs to have a low impedance drop to the positive side. MANY TIMES when you see a drop in battery voltage as RPM increase there is too much resistance between the R/R + and the + side of the battery. The resistance could be in a connection or in the in the fuse box. Run a straight jumper from R/R+ to + side of the battery to see if it fixes the problem. If you want to make that permanent put an in line fuse with it. Else wise find where teh resistance is.

I'm 90% sure this will fix your problems. If not then something is broke and needs replacing (e.g. R/R). If that is the problem grap a Honda 6 wire unit.

U should be able to pass the stator pages with flying colors after this.
