    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

'81 GS450S float question

My older Clymer ('82) lists float height at 21.4 -23.4mm (.84-.92"). This height would require quite a bit of bending of the tab and the float would just about touch the body of the carb. Current height on one is .983" and the other is about the same.
This is also specified as having the pin on the needle valve not compressed at all by the float tab. As my book is a first printing of 450 info I'm wondering if they have a misprint.

My Haynes says the same measurements.

I had no problems putting either of our bike's to that range. Not sure how you are measuring the height, but there are a bunch of good posts in here to tell you how, search on 'float height' (just in case.....)
 
Pretty sure I'm measuring right. Thanks for the info. It just seems so close to the body of the carb. Nice bikes by the way.

Where is the bottom of the ruler? It kinda hard to tell from that picture. I started the measurement from where the gasket sits.

And thanks, her bike is much better than mine :) I don't mind, it makes me less worried about fooling around with mine. Hers stays stock (her orders :lol: )
 
I think the measurement is supposed to ge done with the gasket in place.

I dont think so. In my clymers manual, theres a pic with the gasket removed, and the ruler is on the inside edge (lowest point on the edge when the carb is upside-down).
 
You measure from the flat surface of the carb body (no gasket) to the top of float. Make sure the tip of the verniers isn't resting on the thin ridge that helps the bowl gasket seal.
 
Well I guess that's it then. Clymer also says no gasket. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I get it in shape! Thanks again for the help.

Well, even though I was wrong, I guess I helped clear the issue up...
