A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

81 GS650 engine help

Guys...first, a million thanks for all the great technical info. I'm trying to read more and get answers and you've been great. I have a question just to make sure I got it right.

Voltage on the + side of the coil should be at or near battery voltage. Significant drops indicate loss probably in one of the switches such as the kill or kick stand. OK so far? Now, if the coils are showing pretty good voltage but still no spark I'm looking for a bad igniter? Does that seem reasonable, too?

After reading this thread I checked again. Battery voltage was 12.67 and at the coil was 11.31 on each.

Next...what if I'm just not sure the coil is good, or strong enough? I have a coil from another bike and it didn't spark, either. CLYMER gives a clear description of how to check the signal generator (if checking resistance is enough) and then the igniter box is checked by looking for a spark...Well, heck, that doesn't tell me if it's the igniter or the coil. Any good suggestions there? How do you test a coil?

As background, this is a 1983 GS850GL...I also have an '82 GS850G that I resurrected. It was a package deal: "If you want the 850, you have to take this 750 with it...neither run and the 750 ain't all there." Frankly, neither was he.

There are others in the stable. the whole collection is:
1982 GS750L not all there. This one was being made into a bobber when the owner gave up on it. I got it as a package and used the engine to restore another GS750T that had thrown a rod. I sold the "T" butI still have that engine if anyone wants it.

1982 GS850G. I got this one running OK, but it's pretty dog ugly. Needs a new paint scheme. Black with flames isn't doing it for me anymore.

1983 GS850GL with killer paint, but won't spark. It's the one in question above.

1982 GS850GL soon to be parts bike. It was a mutt with several different years and models cobbled together. This one belongs to my 14 yr old to learn how to mess with and hopefully fix motorcycles. Anybody need any parts?

2003 Savage, belongs to the 14 yr old to ride

2006 DL 650...My Wee-strom, I love it. Gets me around town quick and easy.

2007 C50. Belongs to my wife unless I can get it away from her, which never happens. Found this thing on Craigslist with 250 miles on it in showroom condition for less than the guy owed on it! I love a good deal.

Thanks again to everyone for your help.
