    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

81 GS650E: Melted my rear brake caliper

Did some brake work on the bike yesterday (replaced the master cylinder/piston assy) and took it out for a spin. Should've went around the block once or twice and checked if all was well but ended up going for a 5 mile round trip and the last 1.5 miles the rear caliper was locked onto the disc. Should've stopped when this became apparent but decided to get it back to the shop and once I arrived, it was very nearly on fire. Hosed it down, surveyed the damage and the rear caliper is a total loss (or I assume so) all non metal parts were liquified.

I was going to buy a new caliper, but I do not believe they are available anymore.

Does anyone know where I can get get a new caliper for this bike? Or a good used one?

Cleaning, painting and new seals / pistons should get you back in working order. But I would suggest checking the adjustment on the M/C. If the piston assembly does not return all the way back the compensating port is blocked and the caliper will stay pressurized and engaged.
 
Might also have to check to see if the disk is warped.
Bad enough that it got so hot, but sudden cooling does not help keep it straight. :oops:

Besides mechanical adjustment, as mentioned by TooManyToys, the compensation port in the master cylinder might be blocked by some crud. Had it happen on my son's Venture Royale and one of the GSs (cant remember which one). There is a small hole in the side of the main bore in the master cylinder that needs to be poked clean, then sprayed with brake cleaner and compressed air.

You'll need a new rotor for sure, and i'd just get a rebuilt cailber off ebay
